Keyboard and mouse not recognized after boot-up!

Thanks, but unfortunately, I have no input device capability, so cannot access Device Manager.

Got a PS2 mouse port and a PS2 mouse? That's how I got into device manager without a working USB mouse.

Keyboard and mouse not recognized after boot-up!

I'm having the same problem, my usb mouse is not being recognized.
The mouse lights up with the red light that is installed on it. When I move it, the light becomes brighter as it should, but the cursor doesn't move over the screen, nor does clicking do any good.
The driver has a yellow triangle next to it, and it says that there are no drivers available.
When I check to update the driver, it says the most recent drivers are already installed.
I'm using an Asus laptop, I tried using my other mouse from my desktop, but that one doesn't work either.
How do we fix this? It all started happening after an unscheduled update about 2 or 3 days ago!

I've now tried to reach System Restore by booting from two Windows discs:

    • the first disc has installation media files created using the media creation tool, as described in the section "Use installation media to restore or reset your PC" here;
    • the second disc has the Win 10 Pro installation files that I saved during the download process when I purchased Win 10 from the Microsoft Store last year.

The Microsoft webpage linked to above, and relating to my first disc, says:
"Select Repair your computer. On the Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot. From there, you can:Restore from a system restore point by selecting Advanced options > System Restore." However, when I selected (via a slightly different path, as the path described above was not actually presented to me) "System Restore", I received an error message telling me that I needed to "specify which Windows installation to restore" and to "restart this computer, select an operating system, and then select System Restore"---all of which I am *unable* to do. Does anyone know why I would have gotten this error message?

When I tried to boot from the second disc---which I created using Windows Disc Image Burner to burn the Microsoft Store download installation files, which I've verified as being bootable on another PC earlier today, when the files were on my thumb drive (which is *not* accessible in my PC's BIOS or Boot Menu)---I could not do so, as the disc did not show up in the BIOS or Boot Menu, even when I used the "File Browser" option that allows you to add a media source. So, I opened diskmgmt, and saw that the file system is UDF (unlike the thumb drive, which was FAT32). UDF is evidently not bootable, in this situation, at least, so, what should I have done differently so that the disc would be bootable?

    Thanks!

If you have another PC on the same network with a working keyboard and mouse you can try using remote desktop and log into the PC remotely and then go to Control Panel >> Programs & Features >> "View installed updates" - locate the KB4074588 update, select it and then select "Uninstall".

If the update will uninstall it will fix it, if like the ones I did it fails at about the 45% point after re-booting when it reverts back and says it didn't remove the update, I found that even though it failed to uninstall, the mouse and keyboard had been put back.

Keyboard and mouse not recognized after boot-up!

I have another PC (Win 8.1 Pro) in my house, but they're not networked. Also, I have Remote Desktop disabled on my PC.

I am very interested in the information provided in your post, though, because it certainly tends to confirm my hypothesis that a recent Windows update caused the problem. So, thank you.

Windows updates have been causing problems with peripherals.
As Siv noted see if removing: KB407588 fixes the problem.

This is a link where they had success after removing the Windows update:

Thanks, but as I have neither functioning input devices nor remote access, I am not able to uninstall the update.

See if you can get into safe mode by using the hardware method.
Then when in safe mode see if you can use either the keyboard or mouse.
If you cannot get into safe mode see if you can get into the bios.
If you can somehow get into the bios you can then modify the boot order.
If all of the above fail see if you can get either a mouse or keyboad that do not use USB and use PS/2 port.
Perhaps a PS/2 port may give you a working keyboard or mouse.

The hardware method to the windows advanced troubleshooting menu is:
    a) power on and as soon as you see the microsoft icon power off.
    b) power on again and as soon as you see the microsoft icon power off.
    c) this is the third power on and this time let it advance to:
    preparing automatic repair
    diagnosing your PC
    advanced troubleshooting menu
If the mouse and/or keyboard do not work when in safe mode then see if you can find PS/2 peripherals.

Zbook, Thread starter doen't have PS2 ports on his computer. More and more this seems like mission impossible.

Perhaps time to consider making backup, but computer refuses to boot from USB. Perhaps make the DVD from Kyhi's rescue disk, start Macrium -> make backup image on external drive. Then install fresh copy of Windows on hard drive, mount image and restore files.

Keyboard and mouse not recognized after boot-up!

The correct number for the update is KB4074588.

So far the only problem I've seen with the keyboard and mouse has been having them plugged into the USB 3 ports during the update or an Upgrade. Using USB 2 ports has worked as the BIOS supports them while the OS has to load to get drivers for USB 3. None of the keyboards and mice I've dealt with over the last several years have come with their own drivers except for a couple of 'fancy' mice similar to those used by gamers.

Thanks, but I tried the hardware method that you described and was unable to get it to work. Specifically, I went through the power on and power off cycle that you describe four times, and still could not access the advanced troubleshooting menu; the PC simply continued to boot to the desktop.

I am now able to get into the BIOS setup, but changing the boot order is of no help to me.

Regarding the option of using a PS/2 port, my PC does not have one.

    Thanks again for your suggestions.

    These are 2 additional links:
In the first one a reply indicated that they had installed a new card on the computer to get function
The other was from Microsoft requesting feedback on the USB problem.

Report of the Win10 1709 cumulative update KB 4074588 disabling USB devices @ AskWoody

Filing USB feedback with Repro Mode in Windows 10 Microsoft Windows USB Core Team Blog

If you can get into the BIOS and change the boot order then you may be able to boot to a windows 10 iso.
If you can boot to a windows 10 iso then it is another opportunity to see if you can use keyboard or mouse.
If you can use keyboard or mouse in the Windows recovery environment then there are possible troubleshooting options.
    Download Windows 10

As AndreTen commented there are options with the boot recovery software too if you can modify the BIOS boot menu.

    This is the owners manual:

What happened with USB2 ports compared with USB3 ports? Did the mouse and keyboard both fail with USB 2 too?
