Keyboard and mouse not recognized after boot-up!

I may have to do that, but I'm hoping it won't come to that!

May be a silly question, but does anyone have a guess as to how much time Microsoft (assuming their update is at fault) is likely to need in order to distribute a fix for this?

It will be real problem to install it, since users that have non working systems will most probably find other ways..

One more queston devnull: did you try the top two USB ports in the back of the PC? Those should be USB 2 and should work, if hardware is OK. Also find, if you have any legacy support for UBS in BIOS. Turn it off and on...

  3. I work for an IT company. We got one of these on Friday then 2 more Monday (yesterday) now 3 more today. We have tried installing other keyboards, using other ports, installing new USB card and nothing works. We have found that powering off during boot up 3 times will get you into repair mode and the keyboard works there. We can choose system restore but so far 3 said they had restore points but the restore failed, 2 said there were no restore points there at all, one of those now today says that a restore point was created last night but it will not restore to that. 2 of these machines we just rolled out last week and we created restore points when before they left our office and again once software was installed in their office. This is affecting Dell and HP for us. All Windows 10 Pro, none of the computers that were upgraded from Win 8 or 7 have had this problem. It is affecting all usb prots both version 2 and 3 for us in every case. The only solution that we can see is reloading the OS. I spent hours on the phone with Microsoft, Business support will not talk to us unless we pay $499. Residential support said that all that they can do is remote into my working PC and give me a ISO of Windows 10 from before that update, I could then load that on to each PC and instantly go in and disable the problem update before it has a chance to attack again. We are trying to save the customers from having to reload all of their software and having to reconfigure them for their networks.
I think that it would be very frustrating to be the customer who spends 8 hours labor to get all of their software reloaded then find out that the next day Microsoft released another update that fixed the flawed update and it would have fixed itself the next day.

Keyboard and mouse not recognized after boot-up!

Thanks, I might try that, although I'm thinking that that situation was probably somewhat different than this one, and so I'm not so sure that adding a USB card would work.

Yes, I can do that, but it has not been helpful so far.

I've done that and found that I was able to use my keyboard and mouse.

Yes, but I've not had any success with it so far.

    Thank you.

Yes, they also failed (in Windows).

I'm in the same boat, i have 3 pc's here and tried everything under the sun.

The only solution i can see is bringing my home desktop up here as it has both UEFI and ps/2 ports, plugging their drives in and uninstalling the update, then returning the drive.

Thanks for the good suggestions. I tried the top two USB ports but they didn't work either. Re legacy USB support in the BIOS, I looked closely but did not see any such support.

Thanks for this very informative, albeit discouraging, post.
That's exactly what I've been thinking.

Keyboard and mouse not recognized after boot-up!

    1) boot to the WIndows 10 iso
    2) open command prompt
Please use a camera to take pictures and post images into the thread.
The images of the commands and results will be useful for additional commands.
    3) type these commands:
    4) c:
    5) dir
    6) d:
    7) dir
    8) bcdedit /enum
    9) bcdedit | find "osdevice"
    10) dism /image:c:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions
    11) reboot
    12) open command prompt
    13) sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows
    14) chkdsk /f C:
    15) reboot
    16) plan registry backup repair if the above does not fix the problem

  9. We forced RDP from the domain controller. I then remoted in and removed the update. Then it had be reboot and I had access to USB. However, within a minute the update had loaded and installed again. I rebooted and the update is there but the Keyboard and mouse work.
I paused Updates for 30 days and set it up to force approval for all updates before installing.
I also found that the reason that my restore points did not work was that the size set aside for restore points had been moved to 0%. I had to increase that to 25% then it allowed me to make a new restore point.

    I HATE Windows 10!

We still have no solution for the computers that were in a workgroup that do not have RDP enabled.

  10. We tried SFC and Checkdisk on each of the computers we have here and it failed in every case.

If you can get into safe mode by powering down the PC using the power button held in for 5 seconds, repeat that 3 times and it will on the 3rd attempt take you into the recovery options.

In "advanced" you should be able to get into Safe Mode. Once in Safe Mode go into Control Panel >> Programs & Features >> "View installed Updates".

Once there find "Security Update for Microsoft Windows (KB4074588)" and select it. Once selected click "Uninstall" from teh bar at the top of the list or right click it and select "Uninstall". When it starts the uninstall it will reboot your PC.

On the machines I had this issue with the unsinstall failed and didn't actually remove it, but on starting back up after that i found that it had undone whatever it had done that disabled the keyboard and mouse drivers and I was then able to use the PCs again.

Thank God for RDP. It's saved my bacon many times when I was otherwise locked out of various PCs. Glad it worked for (at least some of) you, too.

Keyboard and mouse not recognized after boot-up!

Images of the commands and results are needed for the above commands/switches as the drive letter is important for each of the commands.

    To fix the boot:

    bootrec /fixmbr
    bootrec /fixboot
    bootrec /scanos
    bootrec /rebuildbcd

The commands to backup the registry are available pending the results of the prior commands.

Thanks for the advice, but before I proceed further, I have two questions.

    • I wasn't familiar with the DISM command "dism /image:c:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions", so I did some quick research on it, and it's not clear to me why I'd be doing this. Could you explain what the purpose of my executing this particular command would be?
    • Although the other commands are familiar to me and simple enough to execute and document, would you please give me some idea as to the way in which you think they are particularly relevant to my issue, and some sense of what the strategy is here?

    Thank you.
