Windows 10: KtmRm for Distributed Transaction Coordinator service fails to start with error -2147024858

Whenever I try and start the KtmRm for distributed transaction coordinator service it fails to start up with error code -2147024858:





The service is required by a piece of software which is failing because it won't start up. Looking through the event log I see the following. It does look like

Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator??

Win 10 Pro. 1709. One of the first things I do upon boot is fire up task manager. For the first time that I can recall I now see "Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator" listed in Processes. And I would have noticed it before since it is right under Microsoft Pay which I terminate each day. It sure does not seem like it has anything to do with Win 10 though I certainly could be wrong:

I terminated the process.No ill effect so far. No recently installed programs or updates. Anyone have an explanation why it suddenly appeared. TIA.

P.S. It came back when I now just went and checked : )
