  1. Laptop constantly writing to disk

Alienware 17 running Windows 10 Home. Works fine, but the thing is CONSTANTLY writing to the disk. I know this is way too imprecise to give me a definitive answer, but I fired up the resource monitor and the "system NT Kernel and System" process writes to dozens of files constantly...

It's been on for over 4 hours and it's STILL writing constantly. Almost no reading...

I have NOTHING running other than the stuff that starts with Windows, and VERY little of that since the Startup section of the task manager has pretty much every disabled. I even turned OFF wi-fi so it COULDN'T do anything stupid over the metered connection and it STILL sat there writing constantly

I can't imagine that this is normal and I"m wondering how to figure out what to do next. Ideas?

    :)

Everything I do triggers 100% usage on drive C and my system crawls to a halt.

Facing the same problem since I upgraded as well: disk usage at 100% and system lagging.

Svchost.exe seems to be writing on the disk constantly into the file DSTokenDB2.dat. Full path: C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\DataSharing\Storage\DSTokenDB2.dat

  3. win 10 boot partition

    hi,

my laptop came with win 10 installed on a 32gb ssd which is constantly going out of disk space. this is the c: drive of the laptop.

i bought an internal 500gb disk and split it in two partitions, e: and f:, both 250gb.

i then used a disk clone software to clone c: to f: and succeeded.

how do i make the laptop boot from f: instead of c: ?

    thanks,

    jari

    Gracie,

Can you identify which files it is writing to? It may help us narrow down the problem, if there is one.

Just a guess but maybe it's indexing. Have you made and major data additions/changes recently? You could always just suspend indexing and see if that quiets things down. It also might be your antivirus scanning while your machine isn't being used. Some AVs let you put them into silent mode that temporarily suspends any background scanning. You could try that.

Hi, please post a screenshot or shots of your task manager organising any columns of interest high to low by clicking on the relevant tab.
Use the icon to the left of the video icon above your post.

Have you at any time altered the page file settings?

Please also download and run Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) and post a screenshot of that for any disks of interest. (Or similar if your disk configuration is unsuitable for that). Thanks.

Noted you have a RAID configuration. Are there any issues with that?

It sounds as if you may have a lot of images. Have you configured Photos, Albums? Or music albums with Groove? Sometimes these cause problems.

(Search Indexing if working properly should back off as soon as you start using your PC, so unlikely).

  7. Well, I've been using the laptop since I wrote the original post. And it's continued churning its brains out for the entire time. Slowing down image processing and generally being a pain in my *ss.

I have NOT made any significant changes, not even any MINOR changes in a while - OTHER than MS shoving that $%^YU*&^% update onto the laptop a couple weeks ago. I suspect its been crap ever since.....

No music albums. No Groove. No Skype. No Google Chrome.

CURRENTLY, the thing is beating its brains out on edb.log and its neighbors. As near as I can tell, edb is supposed to have something to do with indexing, which I SHOULDN'T even be doing as far as I know.

I have windows search turned off. I have DISABLED the Windows Search service. I have checked the indexing and UNCHECKED EVERYTHING. As far as I know, NOTHING should be getting indexed.

I'm not sure where the RAID came up - this is a laptop. Normal, ordinary, boring Alienware laptop. Has a 256GB SSD for the primary drive and a 1TB HDD for image data.

Images are NOT indexed for Photos or any other application except Lightroom. That's where they're managed.

I"ve never changed the page file. The only virtual memory there, is 2432MB that's system managed on the C drive, and has been since day 1.

I"ve got a snip of the resource manager, so here it is:
    Attachment 132830

Worst case, I'll do what I had to do to the OTHER laptop after the "creator" updated - blow the whole thing away and start over installing Windows. Which will greatly p*ss me off, but I have to have this thing working 'cause it has actual WORK to do...

I can try downloading Hard Disk Sentinel when I get home and see if it says anything useful.

Still hoping somebody has an idea 'cause I do NOT want to have to rebuild thing thing...

    Laptop constantly writing to disk

Hi- RAID is in your system specs. Your last post is the first mention of a laptop....

Unfortunately your attachment isn't valid for some reason.

Please post your task manager screenshot or shots organising the relevant column high to low by clicking on the column tab like this when your PC should be nominally idle, using the icon to the left of the video icon above your post text, tooltip 'Insert Image'

Being able to see what's running is a major starting point for suggestions.

Then please try a clean boot, and again post a task manager screenshot or shots.

I'll look forward to the Hard Disk Sentinel report (despite its name it does report on SSDs)

There should be no need to turn Windows search indexing off on a properly functioning system - doing that is an XP or so legacy and should only be needed if diagnosing some particular problem.

  9. OK, I put in the second system - the laptop.

Laptop constantly writing to disk [IMG]

This is right after a clean boot. This is what it looks like 20 seconds after booting. And it'll just sit there and churn indefinitely.

    Here's the resource monitor

Just sitting there writing to edb.log

Here's what Hard Disk Sentinel says, though it doesn't appear to know what the SSD is...

I don't see anything interesting, but that doesn't mean there's not something obvious...

Hopefully, all this will help y'all tell me what to do to fix this... Thanks.

.. but no network activity? So it can't be a download... GracieAllen - can you confirm nothing is being downloaded given the task man screenshot was just after logging in?

  12. It desperately tries to work, but it fails. Unless OP does not want CU, there is no reason to postpone it.

    Laptop constantly writing to disk

Oh - you think it keeps restarting the download...

Would there be anything in Update History in that case, to confirm that?

  14. Fortunately, at home the connection isn't metered. Only when I'm traveling and using a MiFi on Verizon......

I suspect y'all were right about what was happening 'cause yesterday afternoon, not too long after posting all that stuff, the laptop had some kind of seizure and decided it just ABSOLUTELY, RIGHT NOW, had to install the Creators update AGAIN..... I have no idea why, or what it was thinking, but I told it to go ahead, the thing sat and churned for a couple hours, downloading and doing whatever, and finally belched, rubbed it's tummy, and rebooted......

As NEAR AS I CAN TELL, the dozens of edb.log (sp?) files are gone, and after a couple disk cleanups, the remnants of windows update and postvista?? are gone, AND it appears NOT to be constantly churning...

To my non-expert eye, there still seems to be a lot of reading and writing going on, even though the laptop is just sitting there with nothing obvious and actively running except the task manager and resource monitor, but mayhap that's just what laptops do. The desktop doesn't seem to have nearly as much disk activity going on when it's sitting quietly, but at least the cpu isn't 15-18% busy and the disk isn't 50-60% busy continuously...

Previous Creators update failed? Almost failed? I did something stupid? Cosmic Rays? Poltergeist?

Anyhow, thanks, another crisis resolved (hopefully)!

Hi, so it seems what you were seeing was the consequence of travelling....? So... a workaround would be not to travel or not to take it with you and use it without an unlimited connection... *Biggrin

Ok, good.. though I'm not impressed with what you've seen from a design point of view. (I have Win 10 Pro, and have feature updates deferred = I'm not getting the CU for a while).

Also I have updates set to notify only (Winaero's free tweaker - with full explanations) and that should also prevent such behaviour (hint).

Laptops? Here's mine when idle. I'd like to understand why that top process uses CPU time. I've not really investigated - only tried a couple of simple things.

Background resource usage when idle should depend on what start-ups you have, ideally.

Cosmic Rays - I posted an article I found in the VIP lounge some weeks back... not seen a thread on poltergeists- yet- or maybe it's been moved.
