    Well, I'm glad to see that you aren't rejecting the whole cosmic rays or poltergeist theories out of hand!!!!!!!!

    I like traveling, so I'm not gonna quit doing that - of course my method of traveling involves taking along a kitchen, bathroom, comfy place to work with a big screen tv, and so on...

    I've got the laptop set up so IN THEORY it doesn't try to do stupid things like downloading updates when it's on the metered connection. Not sure what happened this time, but at least it's stopped beating it's brains out...

    I"ll have to take a look at the Winaero's free tweaker to see if it'll help keep me out of trouble!

    Sounds good.. especially the home comforts! Setting to notify only is a real boon in that it also means no risk of unexpected restarts.
    Nothing magic about Winaero's tweaker- it's just a convenient way to do things available by the Group Policy editor (Pro upwards) or in the registry.

    The Creator's Update extends Active Hours from 12 to 18 to try to restrict that possibility, but will deliver 'critical' updates even on metered connections. Other changes related to controlling updates apply too.

    As and when you face that, best practice (which regular contributors here use routinely) is to create or update your disk image (e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + its boot disk + large external medium for image storage.

    Disk images let you restore your PC to a previous working state when things go badly wrong, relatively quickly and without technical help. e.g. unbootable PC, failed and replaced disk, ransomware... even user error. And the provide a full backup.
