Laptop immediately wakes from sleep when connected to external monitor, or if lid is not closed

I have an Asus ZenBook UX434, and I also use an external monitor, connected through HDMI.

With a monitor connected, when I close the laptop lid, it sleeps for a few seconds, and then turns back on and shows the lock screen on my external monitor.

If I disconnect the monitor and press the power button, it does the same thing.

Sleep works fine if there is no monitor connected and I just close the lid.

Is there anything I can try to fix the problem?

    :)

  2. Windows 10 sleeps when using external monitor and closing the laptop lid.

    Hey Likitha

    Thanks for your response.

Before we assist further, I would like to ask you a few questions:

    • Have you set Sleep function to activate on closing the laptop lid?
    • Did you check if the laptop goes to sleep when not connected to external monitor and lid closed?

    To respond to your questions

    (1) I have set the sleep function to operate on laptop lid close only when the laptop is on battery power. When it is plugged in I have set it to do not sleep ever.

    (2) I have tested that it does *not* go to sleep when I the laptop is plugged in and I close the laptop lid

    Further information:

    (1) When I first turned the laptop on I attached it to the monitor and closed the lid. It then ran successfully for approximately an hour before hibernating.

    (2) I then restarted the system, external monitor plugged in, lid closed and it went to hibernate after approximately 2 minutes.

  3. How can I set my laptop to sleep when closing a lid when not connected to an external monitor, and stay on when I close the lid when connected to an External Monitor.

When I sit down at my desk, I connect my laptop to an external monitor. I close the lid sometimes to use an external Mouse and Keyboard while i stow my laptop under my monitor. However, if my external monitor wasn't connected, Id like the laptop to fall
asleep. This feature was available on my Chromebook, and I've heard it was available on older versions of windows, Linux, and Mac OS. Anyway I can activate this feature on Windows 10?

    TL;DR

Is this possible on Windows 10?

With external display connected - Closing the lid WON'T put the laptop into sleep mode.

Without external display connected - Closing the lid WILL put the laptop into sleep mode.

  4. Laptop immediately wakes from sleep when connected to external monitor, or if lid is not closed

Windows 10 sleeps when using external monitor and closing the laptop lid.

    Hi,

The issue might occur due to power components corrupted or missing or the power settings enabled on the computer.

Before we assist further, I would like to ask you a few questions:

    • Have you set Sleep function to activate on closing the laptop lid?
    • Did you check if the laptop goes to sleep when not connected to external monitor and lid closed?

Method 1: Run the Power troubleshooter by following the steps below and check if any power components have changed, corrupted or missing from the system.

    • Press Windows logo key on the keyboard, type troubleshooting
and select the top most search result.
    • Click on View All from the left side panel of the window.
    • Select Power from the options,
click on Advanced option and check Apply repairs automatically
      option.
    • Follow the on screen instructions and wait for the troubleshooting to complete.
    • Check for the missing/corrupted power component status of the troubleshooter, close the window and check if the issue is resolved.

Method 2: If the troubleshooter did not detect any corrupted or missing power components, check if the sleep settings are enabled properly on the computer.

    • Press Windows logo + R keys on the keyboard to open
      Run command
      window on the desktop.
    • Type powercfg.cpl in the command box and press
      Enter
key on the keyboard to open Power settings window on the computer.
    • Select Choose what closing the lid does from the left side panel of the window.
    • Under When I close the lid option, choose Do Nothing and click on
      Apply and Ok.
    • Close the window and check if the changes are effective.

Write to us with the status of laptop going to sleep on connecting to external monitor and closing the lid in the same post for further assistance. Your
reply is most important for us to ensure we assist you accordingly.

    Thank you.
