*Party When it's done installing and restarting, I would keep the ISO on hand, in case you need it in the future. Now that you're an expert, you'll be comfortable doing the same process for the next Win10 Upgrade, 1803, due imminently, vs allowing Win Updates to do it in the background, out of your control.

First, what do you mean by this? I didn't think we had any choice about allowing Windows to update our computers.

2nd, I'm at a stand still. I ran the MCT, then I right clicked on the file it created and there was no option to Mount. So then I just clicked it open and I had the option to burn it. Please help because I don't know what to do at this point.

"First, what do you mean by this? I didn't think we had any choice about allowing Windows to update our computers."
You can always choose to update yourself vs letting WU do it on it's own.

"I ran the MCT, then I right clicked on the file it created and there was no option to Mount."
You may have another program associated with iso files like a DVD burning program. When you r-click, if you don't have 'Mount' at the top like in my screenshot, scroll down to 'Open with' and select 'Windows explorer'. This will mount the iso as a new disk letter (in my case, F) and open the folder in 2nd screenshot. Simply run setup.exe (you can see from the date, that it's the orig version of 1709) and follow the prompts. Again, defer 'download updates now'.

laptop not responding after 3/2018 Windows 10 updates

Well I'm back, but the news isn't great. *Banghead

BTW, I found instructions online for using Open with/Windows Explorer, so that hurdle was passed.

Throughout this post, with all the good help and explanation, I've learned things and that's good, but after all this work it didn't change a thing.

I still can't type in Edge. Overall, it's actually running a little bit worse now than it was before the repair install. I opened Chrome and thought everything was ok and then very shortly it froze on me.

I don't know what to do so I'll wait to hear from someone. It's downloading updates right now.

Note: I just went to Settings/Updates and discover that the same update that messed me up has been installed. Maybe that's my problem.

Note 2: I take that back. It is just now installing.

Note 3: I might have found one problem. I have a program called KeyScrambler. I just exited it and then tried the Edge browser again and I can now type in it. Altho it did not help the typing in IE. I opened Chrome again and it's fine for the moment. So I'm going to try and go back to that browser.

Note 4: Computer froze (due to Chrome) and I had to force a shutdown right when that update was installing. So, when I got booted back up it showed the update as failed. I searched and found info to run wu170509.diagcab, twice. First time it showed that it had fixed everything, but when I tried the update again it would did not work. So I decided to run diagcab again. This time the update was successful, but just before desktop appeared this popped up on the screen:
Setting up personal settings for Windows desktop update. (Not responding)

Yes we do, especially with Pro where with the Group Policy Editor you can defer upgrades for up to 365 days, delay updates for up to 30, set updates and upgrades to notify you before anything happens making it your choice.

Sadly MS's default is you get updates with 'random' restarts. (Which Active hours in Settings can help to limit).

Of those options some can also be implemented in Win 10 Home via registry modifications (which is what the Group Policy Editor does- just a front end GUI).

A convenient way to do that is to use options provided by the free Windows Update Minitool.

This and the Tutorial section here, and an easily findable MS tool also provides for hiding Windows updates (= they will then be not applied). The tutorial on disabling Windows updates includes the Notify option.

I have posted screenshots on this topic (mostly the GP editor) on a thread quite recently.

Every time I open Chrome it eventually freezes and freezes my entire computer leaving the only alternative a forced shutdown. And it's starting to run and boot worse and worse. I don't know what to do anymore. Everything on my computer seems to work fine until I open Chrome. I'm on my old desktop right now. I think I'm going to go in there and try once more to completely uninstall Chrome, then reinstall from totally fresh and see what happens. I'm almost thinking that Chrome is my problem.

Altho, the laptop is not booting like it should. It really lags. I suppose all the forced shutdowns aren't doing things any good. I went to the Chrome forum and posted there, but that hardly ever does me any good when I do have a problem with Chrome.

I intended to go to the Toshiba forum too, thinking maybe there are others having this problem, but I found out they no longer even have a forum.

I'm hoping you guys will be able to help me more with this. I'm at a loss what to do if re-doing Chrome doesn't work.

It has entered my mind but oh how I hate to do that and lose all my stuff. I am not ready to give up and do that yet. Is that as simple to do as this repair install was?

The new user didn't accomplish anything. Right off the bat a new install of Google Chrome froze on me and I had to force another shutdown. I'm afraid I'm going to ruin this laptop with all these. I have never been any more stumped than I am right now. I changed my default browser to Firefox and I've been working in it now for quite awhile and no freezes.

I really love Chrome though. I hate that Edge and IE. Do you suppose this all has something to do with drivers? Or, a driver? Thing is, I have had Firefox freeze on me to over the past several days so maybe it just hasn't happened yet tonight.

I've either got to figure this out real fast or I've got to do a clean install before I ruin this computer with forced restarts.

On the Win 10 Clean Install instruc. it says:
you will need to create a bootable Windows 10 installation USB.

Does this mean using that iso file from the MCTool and burning it to a flash drive?
This computer was Windows 7 and I got the free upgrade to Windows 10 Home. Will I have to have a product key?

Well, I have been in and out of Firefox and doing a lot of different things in it and it has not froze on me.

I haven't done the clean boot yet but I ran off the intruction pages for it.

Thanks for posting your results. I went thru all the posts that I missed and have some suggestions.

"Note 2: I take that back. It is just now installing."
Does this mean Chrome tried and failed right after the Repair finished and BEFORE, not while, the update started installing ? If so, then it's not a Windows issue but a software or driver issue.

"Note 3: I might have found one problem. I have a program called KeyScrambler."
Since many of your problems are typing and browser related, UNINSTALL this since it's related to encrypting your typing in browsers. You can always re-download the free version or should have your license, if paid.

If creating a new Local account fixed nothing, then we've verified a system issue vs user. dalchina's suggestions to try clean boot and safe mode are what I would try next. Safe mode is easiest to use, start there (WARNING: you must use your PASSWORD, not PIN, to enter and exit SM). - https://www.howtogeek.com/164876/how...en-you-should/
If computer runs normally in Safe mode, try Clean boot next and add on services one by one to test where the conflict is. - Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 10 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts

"I am not ready to give up and do that yet. Is that as simple to do as this repair install was? "

Not simple, last resort. You will have to re-install all programs and personal files (BACKUP before starting and have programs and keys on hand!).

"On the Win 10 Clean Install instruc. it says:you will need to create a bootable Windows 10 installation USB. Does this mean using that iso file from the MCTool and burning it to a flash drive?"
You can't simply copy the files to a usb. To make it Bootable (can run w/o an OS), run the MCT again, 'Create installation media' again and this time check USB flash drive instead of ISO. Insert flash drive and let it finish. This is Option One in this tutorial (with screenshots) and the most reliable from my experience. - Create Bootable USB Flash Drive to Install Windows 10

This computer was Windows 7 and I got the free upgrade to Windows 10 Home. Will I have to have a product key?
Absolutely not. To check, type 'Activation' in the Cortana search box and screen should say 'Windows is activated with a digital license ...', if you did free upgrade from 7 to 10.

Search box said "No results found for Activation."

After install I clicked around checking things out, including Settings/Windows Update and seen that the very update I think caused the uproar was in the process of installing. I opened Google and added a few things, like my LastPass extension, so that I could use the browser as I normally would and see what happened. Suddenly Chrome froze just like it has been doing. I had to force a shutdown because everything was froze. After booting back up checked Windows Update again and seen that the install of that update had failed.

Note 3: Since many of your problems are typing and browser related, UNINSTALL this ...
This is a paid version and I do have all my product keys for all purchased programs on a list. I have stopped KeyScrambler from loading (and can now type in Edge). Would it still affect other things so that I need to completely UNINSTALL it? If so I'll be happy to do that.

I want to summarize a little here and then I will go and do the Safe Mode and Clean Boot ...
Before calling it quits in the wee hours, I had made Firefox my default browser (as I told dalchina) and worked in it for a good hour, as I have been doing this morning, with no problems so far.
(A note here ... My LastPass extension will not even load in Chrome anymore. Yet it works fine in Edge, IE and in Firefox.)
Everything on my computer is working and when I run into problems seems to be narrowed down to only when I open Chrome. My scheduled run of Macrium even opened and ran this morning, and when finished reported that it had been successful.

Having said this, I do have a big problem with my computer now and that is with booting up. And it doesn't act the same twice in a row; it's painfully slow. For instance:
I'll hear that startup music play in the background while on the screen it's still showing a bright blue window with "Please wait" and the little dotted circle is going round and round. Before all this started I never got "Please wait."
NORMAL: I have a choice to boot with Windows or Macrium. After I click Windows it immediately opens to that scenery screen where the box comes up and I can type in my password. After I do that my desktop opens within just a couple of seconds and when it opens all of my folders and files are on my desktop and taskbar icons are either in place or quickly pop up like ... bing, bing, bing.
NOW: It gives me a black screen for quite a spell before I get the sign-in screen. Then I have to wait again for a count before the password window appears so that I can sign in. After I sign in I get another black screen, usually for quite a spell, before my desktop appears and then when it finally does, none of my taskbar icons are there and it takes probably a full minute before they start appearing. Also, my desktop folders and files don't start showing up until after that.

Just so you know, C drive has 598 GB free of 681, so it's not because I am running out of room or anything like that.
I ran that Hard Disk Sentinel again this morning that dalchina recommended and it still gives me an excellent report.
I ran the Windows Memory Diagnostic and there were no problems.

Everything is working well right now. The response times are even starting to get back to normal as to how quickly things open and such. If Chrome is the culprit, how can a browser, that has been completely and newly installed, have this kind of effect on a computer?
