Windows 10: Laptop recovery

Hello,


First, let me explain my current situation. A few months ago, my old laptop OLD's screen broke and I bought a new NEW one. However, I still use OLD for some stuff by projecting onto an external monitor via HDMI. Both OLD and NEW are running Windows 10.


What happened today is that OLD stopped accepting my account password I don't know why or how, I tried and tried it countless times, including multiple reboots. Also, I do not remember my answer for one of the security questions, and it is not connected to my Microsoft account, so I have no easy way of resetting it.

I can also not boot into safe mode, as after trying this I realised that it didn't project via HDMI but instead tried to use the broken screen. Similarly, I can't just reset it as I must assume that it would use the internal, broken display.


Since I have also have NEW at hand, my question would be if it would be possible,


first to extract OLD's drive an SSD OLDSSD, possible

then to recover the data from OLDSSD using a SATA to USB adapter plugged into NEW,

then to reinstall windows afresh on OLDSSD while plugged into NEW,

such that reinserting OLDSSD back into OLD gives me a fresh start.


Should you have another way of making OLD usable again, I would of course be delighted to hear it.
