Windows 10: Laptop shuts down instead of going to sleep or hibernating even when selecting the option...

Hello everyone,





A while ago I noticed that my laptop running Windows 10 can't go to sleep or hibernate anymore. I don't know exactly when it started, but it may have been after a Windows update.





First I'd like to clarify a few things to hopefully avoid getting pointless unspecific answers like "check your power settings":





1. This is not a power settings issue.



All power saving settings are set to sleep, and the laptop shuts down whether I leave it on until it should go to sleep according to the power settings, press the power button or select "Sleep" in the start menu.





2. This is not a driver issue.



The Intel Management Engine Interface known to cause this problem has always had the same most recent driver installed, and nothing was changed. The problems persists if I disable it as well. Furthermore, the problem persists in Safe Mode as well, no matter in which way I try to send the system to sleep see above at 1., which is definite proof that this device or its driver can't be the culprit.



3. I did run the Power Settings troubleshooting utility.



4. I did not make the slightest change to any settings or software in the past few months, except for installing a few windows updates.





It basically seems like all functions which aren't "Shut Down" have been replaced with "Shut Down" since the system shuts down after 10 minutes if I set the "Sleep" time to ten minutes in the power settings or if I select "Sleep" in the start menu.





I couldn't find any threads mentioning that a recent Windows update could be at fault. Has anyone seen it mentioned somewhere?





Does anyone have any other troubleshooting ideas beside the obvious stuff?

Shutting down, hibernating, or sleeping?

Speaking of ... I just built a new PC with an AMD Kaveri and Windows 7 64 and the option sleep is greyed out, I get shut down and hibernate; it's funny, on my PC (see specs) I get sleep and shut down not hibernate. I tried the bios but I'm clueless. Any ideas?

 

Windows shuts down incorrectly, instead of hibernating or sleeping.

I have an MSI Apache GE72 6QD Pro and I am having issues with the ability to use both sleep and hibernate mode. Every time I select these options in the power menu, instead of going into these power states the system actually shuts off. I have tried the
following:

• Updating my BIOS to the most recent version.
• Creating a new power plan.
• Going into an elevated CMD window and typing "powercfg /h on".
• Checking for driver updates of all important drivers.

And still the issue persists. It seems that the computer tries to go into the selected state and then does a hard shut down (firefox knows that it has been closed as if the power button was held for 5 seconds, instead of the proper shutdown method). The
silly thing is that "Shut down" works perfectly fine, and actually closes open programs properly before turning off the system. The other two options seem to only force a shut down.

 

Shutting down, hibernating, or sleeping?

When sleep is grayed out it probably means that you're missing a driver required to do it or rather a device is incapable of going to sleep, but more often than not it's drivers that haven't been installed. I would make sure you're not missing any chipset or something.
