Laptop would use default laptop's mic instead of headset's mic

I have aDell Inspiron 15 7000 laptop with Windows 10 installed. I have two headsets, aHyperX Cloud Alpha and HyperX Cloud 2. To specified, both headsets only haveone 3.5mm jack as output and my laptop only haveone 3.5mm hole input seen below. They're both plug-n-play, so they're basically as complicated to set up as a $5 earbud from your local store.

The Cloud 2 was my main headset. One day after bringing the laptop home from work didn't install anything new at work the headset suddenly does not work anymore, at least the mic. I can still listen to sounds with the headset, but I cannot use the mic. When using programs like Discord, there are two input options: Default and Realtek HD. Using either does not let me use the actual headset mic, but only the default laptop's mic. For whatever reason the laptop disregards the headset mic. Since the headset is using a 3.5mm jack output anddoes not require any driver, it does not show up as a device in the Device Manager.

I tested the Cloud 2on my other laptops and it works fine, including the mic. Those laptops would use the headset's mic whenever I use a program requiring one. Still, went out and bought a new one, the Cloud Alpha, just in case. Plugged that one in the current laptop and the mic of that headset still doesn't work despite able to listen to sound with the headset. Using any program that needs a mic would make those programs use the laptop's mic. So it is not a headset problem, but rather a laptop problem.

Things I have done to troubleshoot this issue but doesn't solve it:

    - Made sure the mic switch is on.

    - Installed the latest Windows updates.

    - Installed the latest updates available on Dell SupportAssist which has a BIOS and audio controller update

    - Attempted to install the latest firmware not driver of the headset. However can't with an error saying my laptop cannot detect the headsets plugged in.

    - Uninstalled then reinstalled Realtek driver.

    - Right-clicking and do "Update driver" on the audio device.

    - Tried muting and unmuting different devices in the Audio tab.

    - Tried both headsets on other laptops. Their mics work fine.

    - Ran the Audio troubleshooter.

    - Looked at other threads online regarding this issue.

    - Plugged in and out multiple times, including restarting the laptop with the headset plugged in and not plugged in.

    - Purchased a splitter 3.5mm jack input to audio and mic jack outputs but since my laptop have only one hole, bought another adapter audio and mic jack inputs to one 3.5mm jack output and plugged it in my laptop.

But all of that still did nothing. The main problem is that it used to work, and now for whatever reason it doesn't anymore. The multiple threads I found online with problems similar to mine do not have a final solution either. I'm stumped and would like some help, I have exhausted all troubleshooting methods I could've done.

    :)

Laptop not splitting headset mic & audio?

    Hi
Simple version. When i plug in my headset to my laptop windows10 is not splitting it into one output and one input.

I fixed this years back by setting the popup box 'whats plugged in' from headphone to headset. Then it split the audio and mic. However i had to reinstall windows and now when i select headset it just mutes my laptop mic and audio manager just shows the one mic, but two audio outputs.

It was working before the reset and i have tested the headset on another computer and it is working find.
So far i tried device manage audio driver install, for both Realtek driver and High Definition driver but either resolve the issue.

Any suggestions why windows would pick up one and not the other?

I currently have it set to headphone plugged in so that i can use my laptop mic, but ive been told i sound really bad *Sad

    Cheers,
    Zola

    Laptop won't detect built-in mic on headsets/earbuds

I'm running Windows 10 home on a Lenovo Ideapad laptop, and it doesn't detect the mic on any of my headsets/earbuds. I can hear playback fine on my headsets/earbuds, but it can't speak through them, since it insists on using the laptop's internal mic. This results in my typing/mouse clicks all being captured on audio.

    • In sound properties recording tab, I just see "microphone (Realtek high def audio)" and "stereo mix (Realtek high def audio)"
    • In sound properties playback tab, I just see "speakers (Realtek high def audio)", yet I hear audio fine on my headsets/earbuds?
    • In device manager, it doesn't detect a headset either, displays the same list as the recording tab
So do all 3 of my headsets/earbuds have some kind of "plug and play but stays invisible to the OS" feature? One of them is the default Apple earbuds, I'm 100% sure there's a mic on there and these are brand new, so they aren't broken. Are these not supposed to appear as a "headset" device with the headset icon in sound properties?

Laptop would use default laptop's mic instead of headset's mic

Laptop not splitting headset mic & audio?

The cord is a splitter. So single headset jack -> cord -> green and pink connectors for a PC. (which is how its connected to the PC)
I tried the cord to my laptop with mic only, but it still picks it up as a headphone -.- ha
Is there another audio software i could try? Current one is a black popup box in the bottom right and its not something ive seen in the past. Previously there was no popup it just picked up an extra speaker and mic, which i had set to default over my laptops. so it just auto swapped on plug in.
