Windows 10: Latest on SSD settings on Win-10

Thank you David. That is the point that I was trying to make.
And it seems that there is a way to find out if Windows is actually defragging SSD instead of Trim.

Vadim (the guy who researched this issue in detail) seems to claim that the same is true for Windows-10 and hence my request to find out from people who have had win-10 running for over a month (provided ALL 3 conditions laid out in my previous post are met). Mine is a new machine and hence does not have the same data.

 

That's what I do. Install, done. In a little bit, when i get off my Mac and get downstairs to my Windows boxes, I'll run the PowerShell commands for you and let you know the results.

 

I have had Windows 10 running on the same SSD for just about 2 years now and I have never done any maintenance to my SSD.

 

If you meet the 3 conditions that I mentioned in one of the previous posts then could you please run the PowerShell command:
"Get-EventLog -LogName Application -Source "microsoft-windows-defrag" | sort timegenerated -desc | fl timegenerated, message"

and share your results?

Thanks but please ensure that your unit meets ALL 3 conditions:
(1) Need a Windows-10 unit running for more than a month AND
(2)One in which the Disk Optimizer has been enabled for SSD (per MS this behaves differently for SSD and Spinners) AND
(3)System Restore is enabled

 

I will work on it. It seems that copy and paste ain't working into my power shell.

 

First thing to note is that this one of those little 32GB devices, and I don't think it's a "true" SSD.
Also, I may have run Optimise myself manually at times. But also I have a main laptop which I do most of my stuff on, so this doesn't get switched on every day so can go for a few weeks without being switched on. So it's difficult to conclude much from the dates.

Because of the small disk space, it's still on Windows 10 1511 - I'll need to do some work to upgrade it to 1607, but that does mean it's been running a while in this configuration.

That said, here's the powershell results.

Thanks for the results.

They do show that your C drive was being defragged nearly every month and that the Recovery drive has been defragged more often. This suggests to me that you might not have a spinner drive at all in this unit. Is that correct?

wonder what the effect is of Recovery Partition gettting defragged this frequently!!

and c drive retrims is most likely due to manually running optimizer. I'm seeing the same on my box. New unit but running optimize manually did trim, I'm sure windows nearly every month would defrag (if you've enabled Optimize on that partition) which is BAD.

 

That is very OLD information, and because defragmenting an SSD is totally useless and kills the SSD, Microsoft has fixed this issue.

The tables in the filesystem are just data address references and does not affect SSD performance in a way that would be noticeable in any way. Sure the list could be indexed and sorted for some minor speedup...

 

Well, thanks for the correction, looks like I was wrong. That being said, I still feel that Windows is set up to run an SSD to it's 99% full potential and that any user tweaking of it isn't going to result in any noticeable increase in performance. So I will continue with my practice of installing Windows and letting Windows handle it.

I can not even manually defrag/optimize the partitions that are on SSDs! Clicking the Optimize button does nothing. I Run Insider Preview Build 15025 and official Windows Version 1607 Build 14393.693. Both behave the same.

 

The whole point of this exercise is to find out if MS has fixed this issue and based on results so far, it does not look like it.

That is why I requested to run the Powershell script under the conditions that I outlined.

 

It is fixed!

If anyone is running some old build then it's that users own fault. Update to latest official (Anniversary Update) and you are safe.

 

So when you run the script it does not show any Defragging of your SSDs?

If that is the case then that would indeed be wonderful.

 

As you can see from my previous screenshots, Windows has not even attempted to analyze SSD drives.
