Windows 10: Latest version of Java

I use Chrome exclusively for browsing, and am currently on this version of Chrome
Version 49.0.2623.108 m (64-bit)
Google Chrome is up to date.


I have also updated Java as per this screenshot ...



I have never really understood Java, and why it is needed *Huh

Have I done the right thing in updating Java? I notice there are 2 x versions installed. Which is the correct version for my Win 10 64-bit OS? I assume the 64-bit version? But then why would I have 2 x versions installed? And should I uninstall the non-64-bit version?

 

I'm not sure, I have only the 32 bit version which I use for some things in LibreOffice. It maybe you have some software installed that needs the 64bit version too. As long as you have only the updated version on your PC, and delete the old versions, you should be good. JAVA is also used by some sites(sadly usually banks, for their interactive aspects. in my browser(Internet Explorer & Firefox) I have the add-ons disabled though. If I must use use JAVA, I can then turn it back on for the short time I need it, turning it back off, when finished. I recommend this to everyone though out of security reasons.

 

The update is for the Java JRE which is used primarily for programming,. etc.

 

Thank you for that information ... But it raises another question, i.e. As I don't do any programming at all, do I really need both installed Java versions as in my post above i.e. Post #45

If I don't need them, can I safely uninstall one of the Java installations?

Changing the option to suppress offers just hides them, or disables them? Do they install with out user input or are they blocked?

Also, I seem to have the previous one still on my hdd...






Going here just says I have the latest installed.

Edit: Now it says it found the older version. The only thing that I did was enable the suppression option. Do I let it uninstall it? Or can I use CCleaner to remove it?


And are these the default settings?

 

Suppressing offers, disables them.

You only need update JAVA through it's own updater(if it hasn't already informed you there is an update), no need to go to the site to download anything.
The version checker , is not that great a tool. First of all, you need to have JAVA's addons turned on when you run it, second , it always say's you have an old version(on the initial popup), until you run the tool.

 

Used CCleaner to remove old version. So, those images in my previous post show the default settings right?

 

You do not need to remove the old version yourself usually, the installer does it for you.
Here is my Reliability History, it shows that Update 77 was removed:




The settings in your screenshot are exactly the same as mine are*Smile

 

I had both the previous version and current version installed. Not sure why it wasn't removed upon updating. So I just uninstalled it.
