  1. Latest windows 10 update and my need to opt out of it

    To whom it may concern,

I recently received an automatic update to my desktop machine that locked me out of my own computer (blue screen with user profile not recognised). I had to pay $120 for a tech specialist to get me into my own computer by constructing an admin profile. We discovered whilst we were in my computer that the update had also interfered with my keyboard configuration swapping the '@' key with the '"' key which may also have had the effect of screwing up my password and locking me out of my computer. After a short while another forced update occurred which restored my original desktop configuration and mercifully my original keyboard configuration - this update I was unable to stop. This update also removed my login screen with the requirement of a password and made a number of executables on my desktop invalid as well as deleted/made inaccessible all the save games for my Steam library.

So now I am getting a message demanding I schedule an update for my one and only backup computer - my laptop. MS windows 10 updates are not up to spec at the moment especially this latest one and so I wish to opt out of them until I have some assurance that they will act more like an OS and not like Malware. There is no apparent option to stop what could conceivably cost me a lot of money to fix. As such a great update would be an option to opt out of unprofessionally constructed updates (ironically).

My question is how do I stop windows 10 updates?

    :)

Microsoft to make Windows 10 updates mandatory

Well, at the moment at least, you can choose to defer upgrades. Under Settings > Windows Updates > Advanced options you need to check the box labeled "Defer upgrades". What does that do? Good question. The answer I've found might illuminate it to a degree.

I hear this only applies to Pro and Enterprise editions. But I can't verify that.

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK
