Latest Windows 10 update installs new Outlook app automatically

Microsoft released the latest preview update for Windows 10 version 22H2 today. All changes of the preview update will roll out to all Windows 10 devices on Patch Tuesday in February 2025.

Windows 10 is not getting many new features anymore. Considering that Microsoft will end support later this year, it is clear that the company's focus is elsewhere.

Still, with this update comes the new Outlook for Windows app. Windows users who do not prevent the installation will have it installed automatically on their devices. It is pinned to the Start menu and designed to replace the classic Outlook app. Microsoft does plan to replace the Microsoft Office version of Outlook with the new app as well, but said previously that this won't happen in the coming years.

Microsoft confirms the change: "You now have the new Outlook for Windows app. A new app icon appears in the Apps section on the Start menu, near classic Outlook. There are no changes to any settings or defaults.".

The new Outlook for Windows application should not modify the default settings. Means, any app that you may have installed that handles emails should remain as the default handler.

Block the new Outlook for Windows installation

Windows 10 administrators and users who do not want the new Outlook app installed may block the installation.

It is necessary to make a change to the Windows Registry to block the installation of the new Outlook app.

Here is how that is done:

    1. Open the Start menu.
    2. Type regedit.exe.
    3. Load the Registry Editor.
    4. Confirm the security prompt.
    5. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate\Orchestrator\UScheduler_Oobe.
    6. Right-click on UScheduler_Oobe and select New > String Value.
    7. Name it BlockedOobeUpdaters.
    8. Double-click on the newly created String Value and set its value data to ["MS_Outlook"].
    9. Restart the PC.

This should prevent the installation of the app on the device. Note that you can remove the app like any other after installation.

Just a few fixes next to that

The Windows 10 update KB5050081 fixes a few issues other than that. Notable are:

    1. Snipping Tool and Capture Service may stop responding when Narrator is on and the keyboard shortcut Windows-Shift-S is used repeteadly.
    2. Fixes issues with USB audio devices , mostly related to DAC audio drivers based on USB 1.0.
    3. Fixed issues with Windows 10 not recognizing that the camera is on.
    4. Adds support for GB18030-2022.

You can check out the remaining (few) changes here.

  3. open message in a new window automatically

    Hi,

The automatic window pop-up in Outlook is designed to make it easier for you to quickly write and send an email. To isolate your concern, we'd like to know the following information:

    • Which version of Outlook are you using?
    • Have you installed the latest update on your computer?

To check for the latest update, go to Windows Update by clicking
Start > Settings > Update & security and click Check for updates. It will scan and install all the latest updates available for your device.

On the other hand, we suggest that you follow these steps on how to set
Open replies and forwards in a new window
automatically. To do this, open the
Outlook app that you are using and click File >
Options > Mail tab, scroll down and look for
    Replies and forward
section then tick the Open replies and forwards in a new window
    checkbox.

Let us know if the suggestion works for you.

Microsoft to push automatic Windows 10 upgrades in 2016

"Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 will be automatically rolled out next year to all users of its older operating systems who have selected to receive updates.

Until now, users of Windows 7 and 8 have needed to register to upgrade to Windows 10. But that's about to change: soon the OS will be listed as an 'Optional Update' and -- from 2016 -- a 'recommended' update that will automatically install itself, if users have opted to receive updates in that way.*Shadedshun :shadedshu:

You can opt out of automatic updates to avoid this, but Microsoftsays that "we strongly discourage this in today’s connected world because of the constant risk of internet threats". You can also change your Windows Update settings to install critical updates but not recommended ones. Although it's still going to be possible to avoid installation, Microsoft seems quite determined for everyone to be using Windows 10 in near future.

The roll-out of reserved updates was initially staggered but, according to Microsoft, now Windows "will automatically kick off the upgrade process once you have made a reservation".

As an intermediate stage, Microsoft says that it will "soon" publish Windows 10 as an optional update, not installed by default, but accessible to all users.
