Windows 10: Let's run Win10 on really really old hardware

Discus and support Let's run Win10 on really really old hardware in Windows 10 Performance & Maintenance to solve the problem; At present I am running a Intel Q9300 Quad in a socket 775 at 2.5 gig Hz without any problems. This was originally a Vista machine with an Intel... Discussion in 'Windows 10 Performance & Maintenance' started by shaocaholica, Jun 9, 2015.

Yep, as I said, all Socket 775's would have the NX

  2. 755s don't really count as a challenge both in hardware requirements, ease to find, cost, age and tolerance to setup/use.

As for NX bit, there's also the option to patch the installer and have it bypass that check. Folks on MDL did it with Win8. There's a good possibility MS left the NX software fallback code in place so you might not have any issues running on non-NX CPUs having bypassed the installer check. Of course windows update will wreck your day but these tricks aren't really meant for actual use/production machines. Just having fun.

Almost a ditto here. I have two HP's which originally came with Vista. My wife is running with an upgraded Windows 7 Home Premium. My machine has gone through a number of upgrades: Vista > Windows 7 > Windows 8 > Windows 8.1.1. Presently dual booting with Windows 10 (10130).

  5. I'm testing Windows 10 TP, various builds and on various platforms.
I think the oldest PC I have running 10122 currently is an old Dell (refurbished) laptop with an Intel 32 bit motherboard (T2060), with just 2.5 GB of ram. Build 10122 is running great on it.

Another laptop that I have running 10135/64, is an HP laptop about six years old with an AMD cpu and 2 GB of RAM.
    Again, running great!

All this talk about sockets, means practically Nothing to me. (or the average user)
It's not something I pay a lot of attention to.

    *Cool

  6. That must be a Netburst Xeon...and should be 64bit as well but no NX bit.

  7. And here's the tool to bypass checks for Win8 which should get updated for Win10 once its been out for a bit.

Windows 8 CPU Feature Patch (Bypass Windows 8 CPU feature checks))

Seems like the NX feature is pretty harmless to bypass for Win8 as the software fallback code is still there from Vista/7 so you don't have to worry about crashes if the OS needs that functionality.

Let's run Win10 on really really old hardware

    Hi there

as an interesting addition to this - would W10 run as a VM on those machines that don't have the NX support alluded to earlier in the thread or where W10 wouldn't run.

The latest version of VMWARE workstation also has dynamic memory handling so even if your old machine only has 2 GB RAM lack of RAM might not be an impossible restriction.

Modern VM systems can emulate a lot of CPU instructions that the native CPU doesn't have. It could be worth a try if you can't get W10 to work on an older CPU.

VMPLAYER is FREE if you don't have VMEARE Workstation.

    Cheers

I have a Fujitsu Siemens Scaleo P socket 775 Pentium 4 540 HT 3200 Prescott (introduced June 21 2004) with 2GB RAM (Free of charge, rescued from being thrown out with the trash because the GPU had failed), originally with XP Pro. The BIOS (AMI) is dated 03/02/05.

So it is a little older than the Pentium M 780 which was introduced on July 25 2005 according to: List of Intel Pentium M microprocessors - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I picked up a PCI-E GeForce 9500 GT for £10 from a local computer shop, a strange beast taking up 2 slots with a huge heatsink and no fan.

The CPU is 32bit only, single core and 2 threads, so it appears to have 2 processors, but it tended to run really hot, often up to 90 deg C on Windows 8.1 Enterprise trial. It was also very noisy in the CPU fan department. So I didn't use it often.

As luck had it, a couple of months back, another free trashed PC came my way, an unbranded Core 2 Duo, with a dead motherboard. Swapping the Scaleo P ASUS P5GD1-FM/S motherboard (which sadly does not support the Core 2 Duo CPU) into the case, and using the fan and heatsink from the Core 2 Duo, I now had a quieter, and slightly cooler system, because the new case (Antec NSK4482B) also has a huge cooling fan.

It runs 10130 well, with CPU temperatures typically 57 - 70 deg C, much lower than 8.1 enterprise trial, as Windows 10 seems to go easier on the CPU.

Asus P5K-SE + Intel Dual core 1.6 GHz (not Core 2 Duo) + 2GB of RAM + Nv 8600, 512 MB + 120 GB HDD and everything works just fine on 10130.

It is fun reading how old some of these systems are that will run Windows 10. . .thanks for posting. . .*Thumbs

  12. That's an interesting thought but those would be really really old CPUs. Especially since NX can be safely bypassed.

it would not install on the old dell I posted about above ,because cpu did not support NX.

I have win7 home 32 bit installed on it with 1gig ram ,its not a computer I use regular, in fact it was used very little since I bought it many years ago ..it came with winxp pro ,,, it has I think a 1000 or it maybe a 1500 rpm scsi hdd ,just not sure anymore
