Windows 10: LG introduces 48 inch bendable gaming OLED display

SEOUL, Korea (Jan. 3, 2021) â LG Display, the worldâs leading innovator of display technologies, announced today that it will showcase the world's first 48-inch Bendable Cinematic Sound OLED (CSO) optimized for gaming at CES 2021.

The 48-inch Bendable CSO display utilizes OLEDâs advantages as its paper-thin screen bends and unfolds with a curvature radius of up to 1,000R, meaning that it can be made to bend up to a radius of 1,000mm without affecting the function of the display. It can therefore be turned into a flat screen while watching TV and used as a curved screen while gaming. The curved display offers a uniform viewing distance from the middle of the screen to its edge, maximizing the visual immersion that is popular among gamers.

In addition, the companyâs CSO technology enables OLED displays to vibrate and make their own sound without the use of any speakers, offering a vivid sense of reality as if the on-screen characters were talking directly to the viewer. The 48-inch Bendable CSO displayâs ultra slim film exciter, which is the part that vibrates the display, has been reduced to a thickness of just 0.6mm from 9mm and therefore allows viewers to enjoy a thinner screen as well as highly impressive sound.

OLED technology has recently been gaining attention in the gaming TV market for its superiority, as each pixel emits its own light, offering an infinite contrast ratio. This creates another level of vivid picture quality, along with the seamless experience delivered by a response time of 0.1 milliseconds (ms), a refresh rate of 120Hz per second, and a wide variable refresh rate range from 40Hz to 120Hz.

Moreover, for gamers who view screens for an extended period of time, LG Displayâs OLED displays are particularly suitable because they are known for their eye comfort. They have been recognized and certified by leading global certification organizations as emitting low levels of blue light and being flicker-free.

Samsung Display today announced that it has succeeded in developing a 15.6-inch UHD (3840 x 2160 pixels) OLED panel ― the world’s first UHD display for the notebook/laptop market. The display technology giant said it will begin mass producing the 15.6-inch UHD OLED panel in mid-February, initially for use in premium notebooks produced by leading manufacturers. The newly released display will provide ultra-high resolution optimized for gaming, graphic design and video streaming.

Aimed at global premium notebook market

The new OLED panel, as unveiled by Samsung Display, is equipped with a wide range of cutting-edge functionality including a contrast ratio of exceptional quality, as well as extreme color accuracy, full HDR compatibility, a very wide color gamut, and remarkable outdoor visibility, all of which are considered essential specifications for tomorrow’s premium notebooks.

Outstanding HDR captures details even in the dark

The new panel features a brightness level ranging from 0.0005 to 600 nits, and a dynamic contrast ratio of 120,000:1. Compared to LCDs, black color appears 200 times darker and whites twice as bright, maximizing the benefits of HDR to deliver the utmost in high-resolution video and images.

Extremely precise colors that are easy on the eye

The new display provides a spectrum of 3.4 million colors (double that of similarly sized LCD panels), which allows for truly life-like images, with colors meeting the DCI (Digital Cinema Initiatives)-P3 standard, the specification best suited for video streaming. The 15.6-inch UHD panel is designed to keep the complete DCI-P3 color gamut fully intact while emitting significantly less blue wavelengths that can potentially be harmful to the eye, making images easier to view even after prolonged use.

Outdoor-friendly, plus thin-and-light

Notebooks, unlike desktops, are exposed to continuously changing ambient brightness depending on the user’s environment at any given moment. Samsung Display’s new 15.6-inch OLED panel comes with a 1.7 times higher color volume compared to LCDs of similar size, which improves the clarity of outside viewing while also reducing imagery degradation outdoors. In addition, the display’s slimmer and lighter design maximizes the convenience and mobility of an OLED-display notebook over one with an LCD.

Beyond smartphones into the IT market

As a world-class tech company, Samsung Display has led the display market for smartphones by enabling the use of innovative OLED technologies such as edge-design, full-screen and flexible panels. Now, Samsung Display is expanding into the notebook market with plans to get closer to consumers by introducing a wider variety of features for a greater number of market applications.

LG Display Announces World's Largest OLED Panel

That's what I was trying to say. Most OLED displays use use sets of three OLEDs as individual pixels. In order to display red, the red subpixel is turned on and the other two subpixels are turned off.

But if you reread the OP, that doesn't sound like what we're dealing with here.

LG Display uses White OLED (WOLED). WOLED vertically accumulates red, green, and blue diodes. With white color light emitting from the diode, it displays screen information through color layers below the TFT base panel

It sounds more like this is an LCD screen with a WOLED backlight. The entire pixel is either on (white) or off (black). Color comes from the TFT. This is a step up from the WLED edge-lit TVs we're seeing now, as it allows for higher static contrast through local dimming, but it's a step back from true RGB-backlit TVs, and several steps back from a true OLED TV.
