    License question

I have a failing hard drive so I got a second internal hard drive and am now in the process of cloning the old hard drive to the new hard drive. Then I want to take out the old hard drive and put in either a ssd or hdd whichever my motherboard will accept. (It is a Dell 8300) I want to then put just windows 10 on the new ssd and nothing else. I know how to do all this but I am not sure what my license calls for. I had Windows 7 professional on it at first and then I did the free upgrade to Windows 10. I have a new computer which has Windows 10 home on it. It is a Dell 8950. When I go to check my Microsoft account it shows both of my computers. The one that I am asking about has Windows 10 professional 1903. Since my license was first used for Windows 7 professional, will it be good for Windows 10 professional since the free update has expired? I really do not know what my license number is but I do know how to get it using a "run" command but I didn't need it when I upgraded. I know that I didn't sign in with my Microsoft account but used a local sign in. I really do not know if Microsoft changed the license number when I upgraded. Sorry for the long post for a simple question.

    :)

    License Transfer question

So I found this on the MS website.

Add Windows 8.1 Pro Pack or Windows 8.1 Media Center Pack to your edition of Windows 8.1

    • Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, and then click Search.)
    • Enter add features in the search box, and then tap or click Settings.
    • Tap or click Add features to Windows 8.1 and then do one of the following:
      • If you need to purchase a product key, tap or click I want to buy a product key online.
Follow the steps to purchase and enter a product key.
      • If you already have a product key, tap or click I already have a product key.
    • Enter your product key and click Next.
    • Read the license terms, select the check box to accept the license terms, and then click Add features.

Would this be the way to do it? And would it matter that this would be the US version and not UK?

      Thanks
      Conor

    Volume Licensing / Divestment question

    Hello,

We are currently going through an asset sale and have a question regarding transitioning when the third-party takes ownership.

The following are charactistics of our environment:

    • We are a Microsoft volume licensing enterprise enviroment
    • Deploy the volume license distribution of Microsoft desktop OS's and servers's OS
    • Have centralized KMS Server and implement volume MAC keys (for special purposes)
What we know the third-party company is:

    • Are a lot smaller company
    • They do not have an Enterprise Agreement, no any volume licensing
    • No KMS/MAC licenses
    • They deploy OEM/Product licenses within their enviornment, they enter product keys per device deployment is my understanding
So we need to eventually remove these computers off our domain, and eventually off our network.

    some of my concerns are:

    • Would they need to reimage their Servers/Desktops to a FPP (Full Packaged Product) or OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) distribution copy of the operating system?
    • The goal is to keep some Servers/Desktops operational, but once removed from our Domain and network the KMS count down begins (I believe 180 days)
    • Can a volume license install of an OS be converted/or have the ability to accept FPP/OEM product keys?

    Thanks, any advice is appreciated.

  4. License question

Questions on Windows 10 licensing for a Hyper-V VM

I have a Windows 10 Pro machine which supports virtualization.

I want to create a hyper-V VM running Windows 10 as the guest host. I have some questions on licensing and any activation issues that might occur
    1. I expect I'll need to buy a 2nd Win 10 license
      • Does it need to be a retail license?
      • Or can I a buy an OEM license? (I’ll always use the 2nd license for a virtual machine on the same PC but never run more then one VM at a time)
    2. If i wanted to create multiple VMs (gen-1 and gen-2) could I use that 2nd license each time? Again, assuming i'll never actually having more then one VM running at a time.
    3. And just curious: Does anyone know if MS simply recognizes 2 licenses both for the same PC? If I did a fresh reinstall in the future, would it make any difference which license i lthen used for the PC and which for the VM?
