  1. Limited web browsing

I just did a full factory reset on my PC, set it to erase all data. Upon setting up Windows 10 again, my connection while using Edge is EXTREMELY slow. I somehow managed to get to the Google Chrome page to download Chrome. I was able to download and install Chrome, and my connection is a lot faster than on Edge, but I can also only access sites like regular google sites (Gmail, YouTube), etc.) and some other sites like Facebook and Wikipedia. Whenever I try to access sites like Steam, Discord, Spotify, or Reddit (and probably a lot more), I get the message ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT. Any ideas on a fix for this? I can’t even access the Asus webpage to download my motherboard drivers.

  2. child account/in private browsing

    Hi Brian,

I understand your concern, turn on web browsing limits if you want to block sites that provide adult content, or to allow or block individualwebsites or web pages by using their web addresses
or URLs. For young children, you can set up web browsing limits, so they can only visit a small number of sites that you have specifically allowed.

To set up web browsing limits

    • Sign in to
family on the Microsoft account website.

    • Select the child you want to turn on web browsing limits for.

    • Select Web browsing, and switch
Block inappropriate websites from Off to
      On
      .

Now, adult content is blocked and
SafeSearch is on when your child uses the most common search engines.

    • If you want your child to only see websites that you’ve explicitly allowed, tick the checkbox next to
Only see websites on the allowed list.
To allow or block specific websites

    • Sign in to
family on the Microsoft account website.

    • Select the child you want to turn on web browsing limits for.

    • Select Web browsing.

    • To add a site to their allow list, go to
Always allow these and enter the URL of a website that you want to allow.

    • To add a site to their block list, go to
Always block these and enter the URL of a website that you want to block.
    Hope this information is helpful

[Solved] Web Browsing Timing Out Frequently But Downloads Unaffected

Google DNS is a good thing to test, which is why it is commonly suggested. *Wink Limited web browsing ;)

As I explained before, ISP DNS servers can cause issues, go down, and not be updated to your device providing DNS. If you want to go a step further, login to your router and set the DNS servers uses and provides over DHCP to the Google DNS and remove the ISP DNS servers. Be done with it.

I also strongly recommend OpenDNS servers for safer browsing, especially if you're not into browsing malicious, porn or questionable sites. 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.222.222. Those are what I use at home...effective DNS filtering to keep many bad sites that are flagged with malware out of your home network and web browsers. Free and effective.

At this point if its working, I'd say use it for a day and see if issues come back...if so then the other things I suggested might be worth looking at.

    Quick DNS 101

DNS = Domain Name Servers... what it does is take what you type in your web browser, or for ping, or some name domain request...take Techpowerup.com. DNS takes that and looks into an index/cache to find out what address it is...say 123.123.123.123 and then sends the reply to the ping session, web browser, etc. so you can go to Techpowerup.com.

DNS is like a phone book, you look up a person's name for their phone number to call them and connect. DNS does that for web sites and services. It is critical for web site usage where everyone can remember domain names, but not IP addresses.
