Windows 10: linking to Microsoft account

I am new to Windows 10 pro version actually which came with a second-hand laptop which I purchased. The firm selling their older laptops had Windows 7 in place and upgraded to Windows 10 Pro before selling, I am using it now as the new owner and at the moment it works well. I am concerned as to what I do if it becomes necessary for a fresh installation if a problem has arisen after some use. I have read that fresh installations are common practice and should be no problem.

My issue is that the upgrade was done using the Windows 7 Product Key on the laptop. Now the settings in the system read as Activation, Digital Licence and "Linked to your Microsoft Account".

I used the Skype application last week and that insisted that I have a Microsoft Account. I registered for one now 2 weeks old . My query concerns that the linking of the Activation and Digital Licence might be in the name of the previous owner and linked to his/her/their account.

I looked at the Microsoft website which checks accounts in order to check mine. It has mine but says that it is not linked to any devices.

I phoned a Microsoft helpline yesterday and they assured me that if I needed to do a fresh installation it should not be a problem. I have the WIndows 7 Product Key but no other references or documentation. I wondered if, when I registered an account through Skype the laptop automatically logged me in as the new owner of the laptop. It's seems probably not. It does not seem easy to get the Digital licence details/number or the details of the account it is linked to.

Can anybody straighten me out on this one please as to whether I should have done some sort of registration of my new ownership or anything else to protect myself should the need arise for a fresh installation. The representative I spoke to seemed to think there was no problem as things are, which seemed to good to be true, but I need to check that out please.

Cannot link/add my Microsoft Account to Local Account

Hello Ken,

Im using Win10 Build 1607 with all latest update.

I also run all related troubleshooters:

• Windows Update
• Store Apps (says i have to login in my microsoft account but thats the problem, i can't)
• Microsoft Accounts

No Problem found. Also the suggestions from Microsoft didnt helped.

 

Remove Microsoft linked account in Windows 10

This question refers to steps 3 and 4 in the thread How to rename the User folder in Windows 10?

The troublesome steps are:

3) Remove original Microsoft linked account

4) Link local account to Microsoft account if you wish

I was stuck on those 2 steps. I couldn't find a way in Windows 10 to remove the Microsoft account.

Any ideas?
