What timing. Today's HowToGeek article is on Defender as an anti-virus solution -
What's the Best Antivirus for Windows 10? (Is Windows Defender Good Enough?)

I have used their bottom line recommendation for past year (Defender + MB AntiExploit Pro) in combo with Malwarebyte Antimalware Pro with no problems except an occasional PUP. Their conclusion is using care is just as important as whatever programs make you feel better-

"Whatever antivirus you choose, it won’t provide complete protection. If you download and run harmful programs, you’re going to end up in trouble at some point.Selecting an antivirus that has better protection scores against obscure malware you may never encounter may help make you a bit safer, but other security practices are more important. Ensuring you stay safe and keep your system secure is more helpful.
And, considering the scariest attacks these days are zero-days that use holes in browser plug-ins and plug-ins themselves to compromise your system, MalwareBytes Anti-Exploit will likely offer better real security against the actual most dangerous attacks than a replacement antivirus."

Agreed, I used the beta version of Norton Security on the Win Insider versions. The results of that testing has already been pushed out to users of the product, just before the July 29th release.

Hard to believe this site did their homework on that article.

May I ask what MWB is? Sorry if obvious. I'm new to forum, but am looking for information on solving a problem I'm having with my Vipre Internet Security program since I updated to Windows 10. Won't scan correctly. I've been very happy with it to date, but feeling my systems vulnerable without the scan.

I'm guessing it's Malwarebytes. It's usually shortened to MBAM though. (Malwarebytes Anti-Malware)

Hi Leona, and welcome to TenForums!

MWB, or MBAM as it is normally called, refers to Malwarebytes AntiMalware. They have a free and paid version. They also have an anti-exploit program as well, for mitigating zero-day attacks.

Note that the free version of MBAM is not an "active" version, and requires being manually run, and should be used in conjunction with an active anti-virus program; at least Windows Defender.

Thank you for all that information. I am researching other programs, but hope I can get Vipre working with Windows 10. I like Vipre and tech support is working with me too. I think Windows 10 dumped a lot of items that take up space that I didn't want or need.

First thing to check is that Windows Defender is disabled since you can't run two AV's at once. Go to Settings/Update & Security/Windows Defender to check status. Assuming that is off, do you have Viper 2015? My Tuneup Utilities 2014 did not work but 2015 did.
Malwarebytes has a free scan tool which can also remove anything it finds. The Pro version will be active in background and not let malware get on in the first place.

Thank you. I do have Windows Defender turned off, also windows smart screen. I have Vipre 2015 premium version with the latest update. I just now saw on Vipre support pages that others are experiencing the same issues, and a Vipre tech wrote that they are aware of the issues and are working on it.

I download Microsoft safety scanner, that I have used before and trust, and no problems exist to date. And Vipre is catching email spam, so I guess it will be a matter of a patch for the cookie issue.

  11. Anybody know if BitDefender 2015 Antivirus free and/or Total Security works on the big 10? I love Bitdefender products but after the install of windows 10, it disabled my antivirus of choice & Windows Defender became active. I will keep defender but only if MS has made it better than defender of 8.1 and old. Then it didnt fare as good as third party anti-virus in testing for malwares.

I've used BD TS 2015 on W10. You can download W10 compatible BD products here:

I don't know enough about Bitdefender to form an answer, but I am stunned by how intrusive I feel Windows 10 is. So many added apps not wanted or needed by me to clog my PC. After my own research, it was pointed out to me by others how much of personal data is transferred to 3rd parties if you don't manually go into the OS and turn off the automatic downloaded permissions that are in the on position. I still have not been able to run my preferred antivirus software correctly. I know upgrades always have learning curves, but I'm not liking Windows 10 just yet.

I have been keeping up with Bitdefender in their forums. Users say BD does work in Windows 10. But the web protection does not work yet. BD is working on a fix for it.

The Vipre team is also working on fixing the issues with compatibility matters between Windows 10 and Vipre Internet Security. The email protection works, but does not scan for cookies and a full scan took over four hours. My least favorite word and meaning at the moment is "upgrade"
