Local to Microsoft Account for Win10 sign in

I'm currently using a local sign in for my Win 10 Home computer. I've gone the "netplwiz.exe" route to eliminate having to sign in as I'm the only user in the home using that PC. I have several questions involving what happens if I switch and start using my Microsoft account to sign in.

    1. After switching, will I have to use my Microsoft Acct password to sign in to my PC or do I continue to use my local password?

    2. If I have to use my Microsoft Acct password can that password be set using netplwiz.exe so I don't have to sign in manually?

    3. If so, do I need to disable my automatic sign in through netplwiz.exe before I change to a Microsoft Acct ?

I'm asking because I recently upgraded my motherboard and really didn't have a problem reactivating my license because I still have my 25 letter product key but my license is still only digitally activated and NOT linked to my Microsoft Account. I've read that if you add your Microsoft Account in your settings, Activation page, that you won't be able to log in with your local password. I don't know what the current rules are and if this is still true???? What will happen if I try to link my Microsoft Account on that page? I guess I'd like to use my Microsoft Account for sign in but not if I can't do it automatically through using "netplwiz.exe". Would changing my current local sign in password (and resetting netplwiz.exe) to the same password I use for my Microsoft Acct password eliminate this problem if it is a problem?

Thanks for any help with this.

    :)

  2. sign into microsoft account glitch

    Hi Micheal,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

    • Is this the only account on the computer?
    • Was this account upgraded from previous version of Windows?

It looks like you are using a local account. I suggest you follow these steps:

    • Click on search in taskbar and type account.
    • Click on Accounts.
    • Now, under Your account, click on Sign in with Microsoft account instead.
    • Enter your Local account password for confirmation and then follow the screen instruction.
    • Enter User name credentials for your the new Microsoft account and click OK.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards

Signing into Onenote app converts local account to microsoft account

    Steps:

    • Sign into a local account
    • Open the OneNote app (tablet not desktop app)
    • Sign in to this app with a Microsoft account
The local account is then converted into a Microsoft account with that identity.

This is wrong and unexpected behaviour as no indication is given that the sign in is for the whole of windows rather than just OneNote.

It is also hard to revert.

I am guessing that other apps may exhibit the same behaviour.

In fact I don't understand how an app (which is supposed to be sandboxed and secure) can change user account information.

  4. Local to Microsoft Account for Win10 sign in

    Local account installation question

I'm fairly certain that Skip this step was available in 10.0.130 - the workaround in Step 20 (back button) is no longer required.

The currently known, as of 10.0.130, ways to create a Local account sign-in are
    • Skip this step at the MS account creation phase
    • No Internet connection during the install
    • static IP (post# 2 by Fragment) - New (to me anyway)
