Lock screen background image does not appear (Anniversary Update)

Hello #TonyHondaFreak, and welcome to Ten Forums. *Smile

If you turn on Show lock screen background picture on the sign-in screen, then making sure that you have Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing checked in your visual effects settings will fix the issue of the lock screen background not displaying properly.

It worked for me as well, seems to be fixed in Insider Preview.

  3. The fix works for me, but what's frustrating is that each time I reboot, I get the black screen again. I have to recheck the "Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing" box each time after a restart for it to start working correctly. Also, my wife has a user (not administrator) account on my PC, and her account seems unaffected by this bug/problem.

This did not fix the problem for me. I have animate min/max and show lock screen on sign in, checked and it still starts black (but with the time and nice little text "A river flows down from this mountain" hehe)

    sigh

Seems nobody has a permanent fix for this problem since the solution in this topic is only temporary. Guess we have to wait for the next big update in 2017....

Ugh, this is so frustrating. Why is there a choice between animated windows and properly showing the lock screen background? Thank you guys for figuring out this bug in Anniversary Update, I'm now just disabling the background on the login screen, so at least my lock screen has it, but I'd rather both if that would work right, WITHOUT animated windows, because really, who wants to sit there watching windows minimize and restore?

I had the same problem, right after the Anniversary push. I started with the procedure involving the Advanced Performance Options tab in System Properties, but because my checkbox was already checked, as was the case with so many others, I simply changed the radio button from "Let Windows choose..." to "Adjust for best appearance." All that did was check the remaining two boxes, for "Save taskbar..." and "Show shadows..." Nevertheless, that must have changed something else in the registry because I hibernated and resumed, which would normally dump me back at the black screen (Can someone with the problem verify that hibernate/resume duplicates the problem?), and I was, instead, shown the proper background.

I do not have permission to access the provided link.
The link a couple of posts down is from 2015 and not applicable to Anniversary Edition.

Thank you so much! After dealing with 3 hours of Microsoft support, a less than 10-second fix did the trick*Smile

Thanks. This article is pre-Anniversary edition.
In my case though if I follow directions I cannot change it from "Windows Spotlight" as it is greyed out. It also indicates "some settings are managed by your organization." Modifying policies with gpedit have no effect.

    Hello Krawk, *Smile

The tutorial has been kept updated since originally posted.

Did you enable any policies that could have disabled "Windows Spotlight"?

Went back into policy editor again.
Indeed - and this makes zero sense, there was a setting called "Prevent user from changing lock screen and login image" - the setting was DISABLED, to me DISABLED means do not prevent this from happening and Enabling that setting would prevent the user from being able to access that feature. Anyway, I clicked it to not configured as well and logged in again and the setting to change the picture is accessible. I suspect it's a wording error, Instead of Prevent it should be worded Allow.

Great news Krawk. Yeah, the policies can get confusing with the way they are worded. I always recommend to leave them set to "Not configured" if you don't want to use the policy.
