Thank you all. As I mentioned, this started with the latest update. I guess I'm relieved in some way that it seems to be a bug as I've tried most everything I can think of as well, including a re-install.

Not sure what I did would qualify as a "repair" install though. I just put the CD in and ran the install program, telling it to hang onto my files and data. Is there more to it than that?

  4. Lock vs Login screen screenshot

Here are some folks that are having similar issues. I followed the first thread and made changes to my test system. Sure enough I was able to recreate.

To this date my lock screen is a pretty picture that changes but my sign in screen is a solid colour and no matter what I pick, it will not change and I can't change colour. I've changed it to picture. Did the Hold shift key down and shutdown, changed it again and restarted. Nothing. It is a solid colour screen.

This may not match your issue but this an issue and it seems for a number of members once you mess with it, it is stuck.

I suggested reporting on Feedback Hub which is what I did.Lock Screen to Logon Credentials not working as desired

Thanks, Ken, and sorry about your test system. <g>

Do you (or anyone) know where the stock photos are stored? Hitting the Browse button takes me to my standard Pictures folder. I know the sign-in and lock screen screenshots are .png files, but I have no clue what each individual file is named nor where they are stored. That might be helpful.

Yes, that is exactly what a repair install is - running setup.exe from within Windows, selecting to keep files and apps.

Thanks Simrick for confirming what a repair installation is.

And that link and program look promising AndreTen. It does assume though that you know what picture you want to use for the sign-in screen and where it is. As I said in the last post, I have no idea where the stock pictures are located or what they are called. Are they wrapped up in the .pri file? Is there a listing somewhere of what each picture is called?

Simrick - Not Windows Spotlight. They're just the stock photos (at least default/stock on my system) That are visible when you select Personalization/Lock Screen.

    Hi Edwin -

Well, that's part of the problem. I don't know how to identify it for you. All you can see are the pictures. I guess I could take a screen shot, but selecting Browse does not take me to the folder where those pictures are. Quite frustrating.

AndreTen - Not sure what you mean exactly. Are you suggesting that if I tried Windows Spotlight that somehow I'd be able to find and select the single picture I want to use? As I understand the Spotlight feature, it picks a picture from a rotating group that Bing discovers. Not sure about that.

Again so we're clear - this worked fine before the latest major Windows Update to Build 16299. My sign-in and lock screen screenshots were identical and that's what I want. The particular picture I want is still my lock screen. The sign-in screen picture has changed to something else.

I think you may be referring to C:\Windows\Web\Screen

Not sure about a Surface tablet, but they exist on my Windows tablet.

You could try to make copies of them, put them in your folder then try setting one as a Lock/Login image.
