    Login problem on wakeup

OK, the MEI driver shows as up to date. So far, I haven't had a wakeup failure since I set "Turn off hard disk" to "never when plugged in", so that may have cleared it; if it does come back, I'll try disabling MEI.

OK, I finally captured a wakeup failure. It occurred at 12:50 PM 12/31/16. Computer was asleep with AC plugged in; as before the wakeup screen appeared with a login textbox with flashing cursor, but the box wouldn't accept keystrokes. Sleep diags file attached.

  3. I don't see anything in report, as a matter of fact around that time, User not Present Session 3 everything is green.

You wake it up, there is the lock screen. You advance through the lock screen, click on a key, tap space bar, click mouse and you are presented box to enter password.

You said it won't accept keyboard input. Does the Tab key work? Can you cycle around and back to password box?

    Login problem on wakeup

That final User Not Present session ended with the wakeup failure. Yes, it went as you describe. If I wait a while it will go back to the splash screen; I advance to the login screen again, and again it won't respond to any key. The only action I can get is to click Power -> Restart or press the Power button -- either way causing a full-boot restart.

  5. By chance is this a wireless keyboard. If you shut it off and then turn on will the login be accepted.

  6. Could you go into device manager and head to your keyboard. Open properties and see if there is a power management tab. If so make sure it is unchecked. Do not allow computer to turn off power.

  7. Sorry for multiple posts. Not sure if your read #20 yet.

Could I also ask could you ensure you consistently wake the device using one method. By this I mean, if you tap power button, always tap power button. If after a suitable period of time elapsing and you feel you are not seeing issue then use space bar. Again see what happens and finally use Touchpad.

Do you have a wireless or wired mouse connected. If so disconnect and see if this changes behavior.

Trying to determine if issue is related to the process that is used to wake machine. Long shot.

    Login problem on wakeup

OK, there are two items under Dev Mgr/Keyboards:

    (1) HID Keyboard Device: this has a Power tab with two options. "Allow the computer to turn off this device" -- already unchecked. "Allow this device to wake the computer" -- already checked.

    (2) PC/AT Enhanced PS/2 Keyboard: has no power tab.

  9. I would create a restore point and I would, this is me, uninstall both. Then let Windows detect and install.

I would also try that item where you consistently wake one way to see if there is a pattern.

    Re #21:

Opening the lid when asleep always brings up the splash screen, and I can always get to the password box just by sweeping up. No other action is needed when the wakeup is normal, and no other action will work if there's a failure.

On reflection, I'm not sure I should be calling this "failure to wake up", because the machine is displaying the password textbox; the blinking cursor would seem to say it's awake but not responding to keystrokes, so the problem would be in the login process.

I do have a cordless mouse, and I usually (but not always) power it off when going to sleep. With the HP laptop I used to have, it was mandatory to power the mouse off because any disturbance to the mouse would wake up the machine again and I'd arrive at work with it heating up in my computer bag. I'll try removing the mouse dongle next.

  11. If you go into Device manager and head to your mouse I believe there is a setting under power mgmt that says do not allow this device to wake up computer. That should solve mouse waken issues. You could also use a Powercfg command. I'd keep it simple, do it in device manager.

Instead of sweeping up try tapping a key on keyboard to get password box. Trying to see what items work to wake up properly and what items intermittently fail. If you get this condition with sweep up then lets try other ways to get password box and see if they all produce this same intermittent problem.

I ALWAYS get the password box, no matter how I wake up the machine. If I just close the lid, it goes to sleep and opening it wakes the machine and brings up the splash screen; if I put it to sleep with the sleep button or the sleep symbol on the menu bar, and leave the lid open, tapping the power button brings up the splash screen. In either case, sweeping up always gives me the password box. But on some fraction of the wakeups, that box is DOA: the cursor just sits there and blinks, not responding to any keystroke. Every means of waking the machine sometimes results in the no-typing behavior. The mouse business I mentioned in an earlier post was on an earlier machine, not a factor here.

  13. Login problem on wakeup

Okay. I hear you on getting password box, you always get it. I guess I was trying to see if the way you got had some influence on when this problem does and doesn't appear. I'm at a loss as to why it. Only thing I could offer to try is, if you have one, connect a USB Keyboard and see if that makes a difference. Not that you would want to have a USB keyboard with you but it might lead the investigation in a different direction.
