Thanks but I don't want to go that far.
Yes I did clone my Win7 before upgrading.
Renaming a Local Account should be a simple thing. Windows should have warned me what it was doing and asked me if I wanted to proceed.

  2. This is intolerable!
One little setting and I can't reverse it?
Over an hour and a half in a chat with a Microsoft support person who barely understood what my problem was (from India) and another 45 minutes on hold with Microsoft phone support and nothing!
The chat person asked ME if there was a setting in the Accounts screen to "Edit" the account name. She asked me!
So the solution is to wipe it clean and download it again and start all over? I have a 10GB/mo limit. I can't keep downloading this thing.
I am this close to chucking the whole Windows 10 thing and it was working perfectly since the upgrade. This is really sad.
You'd think there would be somebody somewhere who could give me a better alternative.
It's like Microsoft is making you jump off a cliff with all this online stuff without a parachute. I don't care if this new paradigm is the future...I want a choice and I want a way to back out if I make a mistake, especially a small one.

    Rant mode off.

    Ouch

Download it once only. Make a usb installation disk (on someone else's pc if poss). Then restore your win7 and upgrade to win10 with the installation media *Smile

Did you try to create a new local account, or convert the existing Microsoft account to a local account? When you start with a local account and then convert to a Microsoft account, like you apparently did, the actual account name on the computer stays the same - only the login name changes.

I always start with a local account named John because that is what I want the account name to be, including the folder name under Users. Then when I convert to my Microsoft account, the login name changes but the account name stays the same. If I start off with creating my account with my Microsoft account first, it assigns the account name johnh. And that just bugs the heck out of me.

You can convert the same account back and forth between local and Microsoft and not change the account name. But if you want to create a new account it has to be a unique account name.

  5. I appreciate the suggestion but it's a little late for that. I already downloaded it twice. Once on the 28th during the automatic download which failed after 3GB and second try using the Media Creation Tool, choosing upgrade instead of create media. The 2 downloads cost me an extra $70 on my monthly bill.

  6. I did not see a place to "convert" the account, only "use a local account". If it is true that you can go back and forth between account types then that's fine. Why didn't the Microsoft support person know that?

The login screen after I changed to a Microsoft account had the same name as before but also displayed my Hotmail account and used that password instead of the local account password (which of course was the same as my Win7 password from which I upgraded). Surprised the hell out of me because I had no idea it was doing that when it "verified" my account. If you ask me, that is uber sneaky of them.

By the way, when you go back and forth between a Microsoft account and a local account, does the Users folder reflect that or stay the same because, like you said, the account name doesn't change?

OK, So I just tried it. Yes, the option is "Sign in with a local account instead". I went back and forth twice. First time I used my old username, second time I used a new user name. The account stayed the same except for what was displayed on the login screen. The folder under Users on the hard drive stayed the same.

Thanks I'll give it a try today and report back.I'm also going to try and rename my Username back to Doug from Douglas by creating another local Admin User and logging in with that and then doing the rename from Computer Management.

  9. I managed to find an easier way to change both my Username and full Name.
    I used "netplwiz".
    I found the instructions here...

How To Change User Account Name In Windows 8

It says it is for Windows 8 but it works in Windows 10.
After you do this, you must sign out and then back in because it does some strange things.
When I went back into netplwiz after making the changes, the Username I just changed had disappeared!
I also found that until I signed out, clicking on the Start button did nothing and right-clicking on Start and clicking on Control Panel gave me an error. Scared the hell out of me. Signing out and then back in solved these problems. Everything is now back the way it was before I "verified" and accidently changed my Local Account to a Microsoft one.
