Windows 10: Long boot time with Samsung Evo

Discus and support Long boot time with Samsung Evo in Windows 10 Performance & Maintenance to solve the problem; I didn't ask question properly. The slowdown when booting, is it just when restart, or just when powering on or are they both slow. Discussion in 'Windows 10 Performance & Maintenance' started by Horakti, Mar 9, 2018.

    I didn't ask question properly. The slowdown when booting, is it just when restart, or just when powering on or are they both slow.

    If you do a clean boot is the delay still present.

    @Horakti
    In the Bios, check the boot order and make sure your Samsung Evo SSD is the first disk the bios check first to load the OS. I noticed in the boot trace that you have disk in your machine.

    Any updates on this ? I have the exact same problem, pretty much the same log output. Only difference being my loading screen taking 6 minutes on average.

    +1 for this weird and frustrating issue, my machine is performing well in everything but boot, and the funny thing is - the SSD is not even loading for this hanging phase, as already mentioned by several users here.
    Are all users having this problem on ASUS motherboard? I'm thinking this issue is related between the motherboard and windows compatibility.

    Alright I guess only after several weeks we can really judge whether the windows updates are the culprit, when enough time have gone by for the degradation to occur. Nevertheless, I don't see myself continuing to use Windows 10 without any updates.. it's not a solution nor even a work around.

    Give it another shot at clean install once Spring Update is out, never know.

    I have a 1 TB Samsung 850 Evo as a boot drive for Windows 10 Pro and I have noticed that the cold boot up and restart times are noticeably longer on v1803 than they were on v1709 build 16299.334. I have an ASUS Z87-Deluxe motherboard and a (now old) Haswell i7-4770K clocked at 4.0 GHz.

    I'm not sure what is causing this longer boot time but I did notice that Superfetch was set to disable when browsing through Windows setting in Ultimate Windows Tweaker, a utility app that I've had installed for years but only used very occasionally. I also had hibernate disabled.

    I tried enabling superfetch and hibernate but the boot times to the desktop are no different. Previously, Windows would boot to the desktop in around 30-40 seconds but now it is double that, not exactly slow I'll admit but still obviously slower than it was previously.

    Of course, these things are extremely difficult to pin point to a single cause, not helped by the fact that I've upgraded Windows (keeping all my settings and apps/games) twice from v1709 build 16299.xx to v1803 build 17128 and finally to build v17133.1, which is the final release build of the Spring Creators Update, plus there's fixes for the Spectre/Meltdown bugs which I've read can affect SSD/hard drive loading speeds.

    Hi Daz,

    Do you see any SSD activity (via LED) while windows is loading? On my end when it starts showing activity, it takes less than 2 secs to load into Desktop.. There is a pretty long (and degrading over time) period where the SSD is not even loading anything.

    Can whoever has this slow boot time check the "Last BIOS time" value on Task Manager - Startup tab?
    Mine shows 14s after reboot, if you have fast startup enabled and you shutdown, it will be accumulated until next reboot / shutdown without fast startup.

    You can disable Steam and Discord from running at start-up, neither need to.
