Long File names in Build 1607 revisited

    Hi there

On a re-check with the long file names issue it seems by using the registry fix some programs can use them.

File explorer perversely won't accept them which is a bit odd as that's probably the place most users will encouty the problem when copying / moving files.

On attaching a Network drive (from a Linux system) with music files PLEX media server and Logitech media server were quite able to serve the files to the remote devices (Bose wifi speakers and remote chrome / googlecast). Both these devices have probably built in Linux OS'es in them so file handling isn't an issue. My Squeezeboxes could also ply music served up from Logitech media server.

Anything that requires "explorer" functionality like browsing the directory fails so VLC won't play the files in Windows --not a VLC codec problem but Explorer browse function.

If your application calls the windows explorer functionality for browse it will fail unfortunately.

    Cheers
    jimbo

    :)

  2. File Explorer crashes after windows 10 Anniversary Update

We're having the same issue here, especially noticeable and repeatable with long file names and paths. Searching and sorting with long file paths will cause it to crash. The problem is that it works fine on computers with 1511, but broken on all 1607 computers.
So something was working and now it's broken. I've tried this across several computers with fresh installs of 1607 on each.

  3. Security flaw in long file names?

It wasn't actually a .RAR file. It was from a torrent I downloaded. The torrent was abandonware MSDOS games like "Rex Nebular and the Cosmic Gender Bender". LOL. That's just one obscure title from the pack, even had "Hero's Quest" EGA before Milton Bradley
made Sierra change it to Quest for Glory. But this is not about awesome games from the past that I would have liked to experiment with in DOSBOX...

The torrent got stuck at like 34% and wouldn't continue for like 2 days, so I used my client to "Delete torrent w/ data" option and I have my own setup where incomplete torrents are in F:\Torrents\Incomplete while completed ones are in F:\Torrents\Complete,
then I move them to their proper place in C:\ or D:\ or whatever.

When I click "delete torrent w/ data" in the client it is supposed to delete it off my drive, complete, incomplete, whatever. I only click that when I have a stuck torrent, and then my incomplete folder is empty. But while the client removed all the incomplete
    rar files like for example:

    F:\Torrents\Incomplete\MSDOS Abandonware PACK\MSDOS Abandoware-189274382w39i8bvjdsa b,ghbkvjluya;ib8nsedyrhnvg[89hns dyrbnp897vyghnbsgaerjkulvryguo7vae6g4coubt7ysudhcrngytvu7klnhsey4tuivkhn7tayuknh47e4rybtua7seklhyec4ouint7aey4uvhon7tyesu7akhy4tuo7wae46gyhctuo7awyehwu4otv7hywse845ki4\MSDOS
    Abandonware-kuwsdepihfdfusavytiryt45y6bk8bysduhntfikwvbs875ytkusyrhubtyreso5i6bstywes5iukyvthg547hwyst4uihvwy74vbhikutsyh5vuikyvtoes5uihyt8ikw4yh58t7wesyot8l5ykisuevhntrgoiyvsdortl8igy8lt7ryg87lrtsyhbgvolivrdsy8g\rexneblr.RAR (8.3)

And those are just random keyboard slaps, but you get the idea these were longer even maybe directory names, but all the actual rar files were gone, since they used the 8.3 naming scheme. BUT this was left

    F:\Torrents\Incomplete\MSDOS Abandonware PACK\MSDOS Abandoware-189274382w39i8bvjdsa b,ghbkvjluya;ib8nsedyrhnvg[89hns dyrbnp897vyghnbsgaerjkulvryguo7vae6g4coubt7ysudhcrngytvu7klnhsey4tuivkhn7tayuknh47e4rybtua7seklhyec4ouint7aey4uvhon7tyesu7akhy4tuo7wae46gyhctuo7awyehwu4otv7hywse845ki4\MSDOS
    Abandonware-kuwsdepihfdfusavytiryt45y6bk8bysduhntfikwvbs875ytkusyrhubtyreso5i6bstywes5iukyvthg547hwyst4uihvwy74vbhikutsyh5vuikyvtoes5uihyt8ikw4yh58t7wesyot8l5ykisuevhntrgoiyvsdortl8igy8lt7ryg87lrtsyhbgvolivrdsy8g\MSDOS Abandonware-jkeshfjkhasrg;jhajhiuyhdsraigp8yvn584vyt5vhrdzmrviofuvgsdkhvtip8ge57y58ty5p98ynepti5ns8vytv7598yvpa9e8avy5p9tye59potyvwvp9ty5p98wyev5tp9sw5jymp9t8r5698pyt5vjms9r58yjvm98tvmyj5ep98t5njmpe98bve5uy9s8vyu5985euymsj9r5hy9.TXT

So all that was left was a txt file that I assume had a description of each of the 8.3 rar files since fitting game names in 8.3 naming scheme can be confusing.

And that's that. Hope I answered your question and ty for responding to mine.
