Windows 10: Loss of optical drive on first access

Loss of optical drive


Hi, looking for information on the above problem, system specs below with additional info:


Win 10 Home
1803
Install 06-10-18
Build 17134.345

On DELL desktop
Inspiron 3470
i5-8400 @2.8GHz
8GB ram
64 Bit OS on X64 based processor

Last update: October 9, 2018—KB4462919 (OS Build 17134.345)



Shop purchased, ready configured.

On start up the optical drive is visible; it tests out ok on hardware check.

Putting in a standard music CD (bought original) into drive it offers MS Media Player.
As it attempts to play it then generates a pop up box saying “Drive not found”.

On checking explorer it has disappeared from the list of drives, using - view hidden devices, it does show it in the list.

Right mouse clicking, properties, drives out the following message

“Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)

To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer.”



Reboot the PC and it will appear again, fault is evident on every attempt from multiple accounts, including admin.



Drive is not accessible; it appears to lose connection with the drive on access. This has only happened post last update, it did work prior to the update!
Don't believe its hardware or cable related as it returning every time the PC is rebooted would be too much of a coincidence.



Hardware troubleshooter can’t find a problem, deleting from device manager causes it to reinstall problem persists. Driver says it’s up to date.


Any observations or even a solution would be appreciated.

Optical Drive missing

Hello,

To find Optical Drive, we recommend checking it on Device Manager. Here are the steps below:

• Press Windows key.
• Type and click Device Manager in Cortana search box.
• Click View.
• Select Show hidden devices.

Let us know how it goes.

 

Optical Drive

Hi ERNESTSMITHVM,

Boot into BIOS/UEFI and check that the Optical drive is listed there, if it is not then the Acer Tech has somehow not connected that drive correctly . . .

Otherwise, in Windows , open Device Manager - is hat drive listed at the top of the Hardware list?

• When you mentioned D Drive, are you pertaining to a partition or a separate external drive? - D Drive = Solid State Drive; 1 of 2 internal drives (the other being an optical drive);
• Were you able to check if indexing was already completed? - Indexing completed on each attempt of rectification;
  
• In the meantime, we suggest that you run the Search and Indexing troubleshooter - Done prior to posting; useless! It does not find any problems.
