  1. Lost Admin permissions to only user

I made a mistake that I am most certainly not proud of. Without paying much attention which is why you maybe shouldn't do things like this late at night... I change my account to only be a part of the User group, thus losing Admin privileges. Considering this is the only user on the computer, I am now at a loss for what to do as there is no other user with admin privileges to sign in to, and then fix my error.

I have seen a few recommendations on this forum and tried a number of them, but ultimately as is to be expected, I am not granted access to do any of these things.

I cannot access the sections of the control panel to manage this visually as it tells me I require elevated status. I likewise cannot perform any command line actions to change this either such as :

    net localgroup Administrator Baird /add

However, in PowerShell I see that there is an Administrator account. In fact, there are five accounts: Admin, Baird this is my name, DefaultAccount, Guest, and WDAGUtilityAccount. Given that the Admin account exists, I am comforted that somehow I need only access it to make the appropriate changes.

Another angle I considered is approaching this from Ubuntu running on WSL. If it can mount the C drive and access files, should it not be able to change user permissions as well?

I've wasted a lot of time already trying to fix this embarrassing mistake, but now I think I need some new ideas.

Has anyone dealt with this before?

    :)

  2. Win7 User Admin permissions broken

Basically it's an administrative user not the root admin , I don't know what it went wrong with settings and i forogot , but the permissions for it account were messed and now it cannot delete/edit sometimes stuff that came from rar or downloader or even installs, plus cannot uninstal most of programs , it's only possible with root admin (hidden), is there a way to restore these privilegies.

Also the error points "You need administrative privilegies from Administrators/[Nickname] "
BUT I AM THE DAMN USER !!!!

It's not my PC so i really don't want to dig it up from scratch.

The PC has RAID0 so basically im not going to go over that again with a reinstall/reformat. ... takes time.

  3. No permissions

    Hi,

I would suggest you to right click on the user's folder for your profile and check if the permissions shows as "read only'. If this is the case, it might be causing the issue. In this case, I would suggest you to go to C:\User folder, right click on the
folder with your username and follow these steps:

    • Open the properties of the main user profile folder where the files are located (such as Documents, Pictures, etc).
    • Go to the Security tab and click Advanced.
    • Check the box at the bottom of this window. It is labeled "Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object" and then click Ok.
This does a one-time action that replaces the security on all the files/subfolders. It’s one-time, so you won’t find that box checked if you peek at it later. Try these steps and let us know the results for further assistance.

  4. Lost Admin permissions to only user

Upgraded to Windows 10, lost admin permissions, downgraded back to 7, no admin permissions

    Hello Shanna,

Thank you for posting your concern in Microsoft Community and we regret for the inconvenience.

At this point, I suggest you to check if the same issue occur when logged in through a different user account.

    Follow the steps:

    • Assuming that you are already logged on to your user account in Windows 10, click the Start button.
    • From the Start menu, click your name from the top of the left pane.
    • From the displayed options click Sign out.
    • From the login screen, click to the different user account you want to switch to.

However, if you do not have a separate user account, I suggest you to create another administrator user account by referring to the Microsoft article here: Set
    up accounts
    .

Write to us with the updated status for us to be able to assist you further.

    Thank You.
