Windows 10: Lost document update after last upgrade

I was working on a word document when I got the notification for update windows. I hit update later and continued to work on the document. After a few hours, I saved the document (to my desktop where it has been since it was created a couple of weeks ago). Then updated windows before shutting down the computer. I turned on the computer and its no long on my desktop. I searched for it in the search bar, and found a document listed with the same name. I open it and its a previous version, without any updates from yesterday. I lost hours of work! What happened? How do I get my original document back? And there are several others missing, again from the desktop.

• Have a look in the folder C:\Windows.old\Users\MjKoval\Documents.

Implement a robust backup scheme. If you have very important documents then they must be stored on two independent media.
Do not wait until they are lost.
