Thanks. I always have a recent Macrium image of my C drive on my SSD and that would be my first choice following a crash etc. but its good to have another recovery route.

Those MR images are also nice because you can mount them thru MR and pick at the files and copy if needed.

  3. As is usual, the Windows 7 Games for Windows 10 and 8 are removed.
Only the games that are installed locally are removed.

You have to use the MCT to update from CU to FCU. It is even stated on Microsoft's page for the ISO.

I have a question and a statement. I have seen a lot of problems with "upgrading". Seems like most of the problems people are having is due to their "upgrading". I've been just doing a clean install when I've done my OS's. I'm still on the ann edition and have had no problems except for some problems with a few flash sites using IE. My question is, isn't always better to do a clean install to minimize any problems that are not OS bugs?

  6. Hi,
Every large update creates a new 450mb system partition so people can roll back out of the update
Some people might not know that and have mbr disks and not gpt.
10 is like the worst partition garbage dumper I've ever seen *Biggrin

No, not in my case. I started with OEM Win7, upgraded to 10240 when it was first released and upgraded to each new version since as it came out (by using the MCT to make install media on USB and upgrading using that). Now I'm on Fall Creators update with no problems. I have too much else installed to go through the pain of a clean install every six months. Besides, some of it was installed by the OEM so I have no media or keys to reinstall it.

Seems to me that many of those having problems upgrading have tweaked their systems with third party tools and/or use third party AV or firewalls. I stick to Defender and don't tweak beyond what is available through settings or control panel (bar one or two very minor registry fixes). Perhaps that's why my upgrades are painless?

Always used 3rd Party av here for years, always felt better system performance with 3rd party antivirus, Don't tweak that much though, just update Avast on each Windows 10 System monthly, and sometimes uninstall/reinstall to fix issues with it on those systems. Don't know if my Pro activation issue was related to Avast or not, or it somehow getting Home edition on the clean install, probably not

Am Currently trying Defender on this Pro install, maybe will stick with it, but not sure yet, if I do then will have to probably change phone antivirus as if I see Avast on there, i'll be tempted to put Desktop to it I think as I always have been before

As for Fall Creators running great now, in everything I do, so think all is good for the moment

  9. Hi,
Just running the updates is almost like clean installing every reg edit has to be redone
I have a stash of @Brink 's reg files on hand but it is getting old repeating every 3-4 months
It should not have to be this way MS needs to start abiding to existing install settings..... dagnabit *Tongue

You just have to go back and reinstall them. It has been known since Anniversary that some items will get removed if not recognized as having proper signatures issued by Microsoft.

My W10 Home laptop took until last week to upgrade to the CU via Windows Update and surprised me by updating to the FCU yesterday. The update went fine apart from the following irritations:

    • Had to set fonts sizes using the .reg files on this forum (useful)
    • Outlook 2010 reconfigured itself
    • Had to disable hibernation & fast start up
    • Had to turn off auto optimsation of system partitions
    • Some new errors e.g. Windows.MiracastView Error?

Windows 10 Anniversary (v1607) will no longer receive security updates on or about March 2018. You shouldn't use it after that date. Support Ends "Tentatively March 2018"

Updated two very old machines on 17th one with a Dual Pentium and used the Assistant which told me there wasn't enough space but this was because my 30gb SSD was full as WU had downloaded the update already so used disk cleanup to restore space and used the Assistant to do the upgrade. The second machine with a Core 2 Duo I used the MCT ISO on a USB drive to do an in-place upgrade. I have backups for both machines using Macrium but so far they haven't been needed. No problems of note so far and using BitDefender Free as an AV. Nice to see MS is still supporting old CPUs/machines as these machines were built around 2008.

Banger grab a 120GB Samsung 850 Evo. They are going really cheap these days. Why not take the Core 2 Duo and do a CPU upgrade on that machine. I still have two other machines that I am debating on swapping out the CPU's to still stay with having enough horsepower to use them with Windows 10 if I ever have to. I have yet to really make a full image of the one system that I do run 10 on, since it is not more than a box to have if my wife needs Office or work from home. I will say that with the CPU change, the one machine that I do have is running better than it did with the Core 2 Duo.
