Ooops. Sorry about that. It's the same in principle, but to access the System Protection tab, type "restore" into the Cortana/Windows Search prompt and then select the "Create a restore point" item that pops up.

If you find system restore is active for Drive E:, then disable it and make sure you delete any restore points on it.

Other than that make sure that there's nothing on that drive that is not part of the HP recovery function. Make sure you enable viewing both hidden and system files in File Explorer. Post a screen shot of what File Explorer shows if you want help figuring out what may be there that doesn't belong.

  3. The first thing it tells me is to be sure to create recovery disk(s) in case every thing goes south. I've been looking at web sites supposedly showing how to do that and they scare the bejeebers out of me. Here is an example:
How to create a Windows 10 recovery disk | TechRadar
I'm tempted to go ahead without creating recovery disk(s) for fear that I might end up in a mess that I don't know how to deal with.

Here is what "File Explorer" shows and I am totally confused. Shouldn't all that stuff be in Recovery Drive (E) if it's going to do a recovery?

    Hey Ken,
You need to post a screen shot of just the folders/files on Drive E:

NO. You should NOT have a copy of or your actual Desktop on Drive E:. I understood you to say earlier you didn't copy anything there. I suspect all this stuff on that recent files view on Drive E is whats filling it up.

There should be nothing on that drive except the HP recovery files, the largest portion comprised of multi GB chunks of data containing the image of your Disk 0 as it came out of the box from HP.

I would get a copy of the free version of Macrium Reflect and make images to an external drive of both Disk 0 and Disk 1 as your first order of business.

Have a look at the tutorials section of TenForums for very well formatted step by step guidance on making generic Windows recovery media.

Neither Windows recovery media nor the HP recovery partition will help you regain your personal data if something happens to it. However, an externally stored image made by a reliable 3rd party software (such as Macrium) WILL..

" I understood you to say earlier you didn't copy anything there." I also said that Seagate might have stored something there without my knowing it. That's the only way it could have gotten there. I totally don't understand any of this crap except that Microsoft is totally willing to market it to people who don't understand it and then can't make it work for them. Adios.

  9. Ken, just relax. We have all been there and done that.

It's not Microsoft's job to train us. When one wants to do more with Windows one has to learn more.
We are here to help you do just that. Just take a deep breath and relax.
We know it can be frustrating. I'm just learning Windows 10 and it is a challenge at times. Its that way every time I change operating system.

Start with this. Some basic names.
Look at your picture of Disk Management.

You have Disk '0' and Disk '1'

Inside Disk '0' you have 3 Partitions
Inside Disk '1' you have 2 Partitions.

A Disk is a certain size it came from the manufacture with. Lets say 500 gb. Disk have numbers like '0', '1' up to as many drives your system can handle.

A Partition is within the Disk and can be made any size you care to have it, up to 500 gb. in this example. Partition have letters like 'C', 'D', 'E' and so on.
This will give a option to haveone or more Partitions within one Drive.

I hope this will make it easier for you to understand and post about disk management.
The proper terms help other help you.

  11. You volunteers do an excellent job and I surely do appreciate it. I understand that it's my responsibility to make an effort to learn but my quarrel with Microsoft is about quality. I think they are in such a hurry to market new software in order to make more profit that they put stuff out there before it has been reasonably tested and they make us be the guinea pigs and deal with their problems. I would point out that I am not the only person in the world who is convinced of this.
It looks like your reply to the thread contains the kind of information that I need (and have been lacking) in order to get a handle on this. I'll copy and print it all and give it a go.
    Thanks very much.
