    Macrium Backup error

I was getting system hanging problem in my windows 10 for quite a days (my system is dual boot with two hard disk, one XP and other Windows 10). I already have macrium backup image but I tried to take a new backup of my windows 10 system drives with the free version from Desktop thrice and every time I got this error "Backup aborted! Unable to read from disk - Error Code 23 - Data error (cyclic redundancy check)".

I ran chkdsk c: /r but it hanged at 14%. I also ran disk error checking without any success.

Once I also got MFT corrupt error but I think it was resolved automatically.

Then I ran macrium from bootable media and I got success in creating Image except one warning that there was one cluster of bad sectors and data may been lost in that sector.

My question is that if I could get the image backup with bootable media than what was the problem with Desktop version. Note my Desktop version is updated but bootable media is not updated but both are having same version 6.

Do you suggest me to go for new hard disk.

    :)

Do you get any error code when backup didn't finish?

As informed, Backups are being deprecated and Microsoft itself recommends to switch to a 3rd party backup solution like Macrium.

  3. Convert MBR to GPT without data loss?

Windows backup is depreciated in Windows 10 and is not reliable.

I Suggest backup using Macrium Reflect, a freeware that covers all the requirements.

Please see on how to backup:

    Macrium Backup error

In general Macrium can handle running whilst windows is running. Many cloing tools will only work if you boot from outside windows.

I expect that it was just too difficult to sort out errors whilst running windows.

Frankly, once you get read errors, you cannot even 100% certain image will restore ok.

You could try and restore image to a spare hdd to test it.

If that fails, or you do not have a spare drive, Yyou should backup data separately in case you need to reinstall from scratch.

You may wish to check the SMART parameters for your drives and make sure one isn't failing.

Try e.g. Crystaldiskinfo (free) which gives a fairly simple indication.

I tried Crystaldisk. Could not understand fully. There were two yellow marks something like unrecoverable sector and pending ( sorry I did not save the image to tell exactly but in the meantime chkdsk ran completely and after that macrium also did its job without any error. I am attaching the chkdsk log. Can you tell me what happened to the Bad sectors. The log is showing small bad sectors but what I am not able to understand that chkdsk has done what to these bad sectors.

    Macrium Backup error

Hi, it's a normal feature of HDDs for bad sectors or clusters to be substituted by good. Only problem there: if you had data on your disk that proved unrecoverable.

So Chkdsk passed and Macrium works.

Still worth rechecking your SMART params if the disk is degraded - I can't really tell from the above- just suggests there may be a problem.

    Is there a remaining problem?

Reallocated Sectors is ok, which is important.
    Spin Retry Count also ok
Uncorrectable sector count - 2 shown.
The total count of uncorrectable errors when reading/writing a sector. A rise in the value of this attribute indicates defects of the disk surface and/or problems in the mechanical subsystem.

I would say there's some indication of degradation, and you need to keep an eye on this, making sure you have adequate backup arrangements.Unfortunately some other numbers are vendor specific and not immediately meaningful (not a % e.g.)

    Mine for comparison:

Sam9, I'm so glad you are making backups!
Keep the other backup image you made before this SMART stuff started, you might need to pull off some folders/files down the road from those earlier backups.
Before all the SMART stuff began:
-- did you make the Macrium Reflect usb or dvd WinPE-Macrium boot? [*]
-- did you add Macrium WinPE boot to your hard-drive's bcd menu? [*]
[Reason for asking: you can bypass normal Windows and make full images of OS and data partitions.]
While you may have months or weeks, when my HD SMART glowed -- I only had 2-3 days. Just letting you know. From what I can see, Macrium Reflect did you a huge favor by alerting you of a hard-ware or soft-ware problem. [*] I'm using Windows 7, so if the above will not work within Windows 10, you all please let me know, thanks!

RolandJS, I have Macrium USB and I have also installed Macrium On PC and also added Macrium on Boot Menu. Macrium is really doing a good job. I keep saving images with Macrium periodically. Restores have also been tested by me. Working awesome on Windows 10 and Windows 7. I am using XP also but so far not restored XP, only saved image.

In other disk Cpsc and usc both value for current 97 worst 1 and raw 000000000051.

Please confirm whether these hard disk are near dead.

    Thanks
