    Macrium Refect Questions

I think EVERYONE is welcome here on the Windows 10 forum, lots of folks join just to learn more about Windows 10 Before they upgrade their system, to read about the in & outs of installing and running Win 10. Give him a break. Just my opinion.

I have windows 10 in my laptop and dell venue 8 pro with macrium reflect. I have made rescue usb with macrium and also win81pese iso usb using winbuilder from oven.org. Using installed macrium, I get images in both machines. But use the usbs for putting images back. Though I did not have a need, I tested restoring backup. It worked flawless in both cases. For DV8P, I made bootable macrium usb as described in tabletpcreview forum. Now oven.org has win10pese also. For me in my laptop, all the three bootable usbs(rescue from macrium, win81pese, win10pese) boot and works.

Didn't know that, but I still prefer using my DVD's been doing it that way for at least last 20 years or so. *Smile Would have to learn how to make one bootable too. lol Plus I have like 10 usb drives on this computer, if I did I hope windows knows which usb drive I was using to boot too. *Smile

That's your best choice, so I don't blame you one bit for using your usb drive. This computer is a Desktop with lots of choices for me to use. I just prefer my DVD drive.

@OldMike hey Mike, with Macrium(free & paid versions) there is an option to create a boot option. I leave my boot time out to 0 and if I fail to boot to Windows(BSOD or crash the boot process on purpose) 3 times it boots to UEFI and I can choose to boot to Macrium. It also functions when I spam the escape button during boot.
Nice thing with this option is if I need to reimage or repair the boot manager, it's from my SSD system drive and reeeeeal fast.
You can also use it to image "offline".
Just informing, to offer you more options*Smile

Thanks Cliff, I saw that option, just don't know yet, if I want to try it. Never had problems using my dvd method until the last 2 or 3 days. Ran chkdsk on c drive, and at boot, it found no errors or problems at all. So seems to be something with Macrium.

    (1) Are you choosing the UEFI boot option for the DVD or just the plain DVD boot option?
(2)This error message means that Windows has lost connectivity with your device.

One possible solution is to enable write file caching. To do this,

    1. Open Reflect.
    2. Select the Other tasks menu from the menubar, then select "Edit Defaults".
    3. Click on the advanced tab.
    4. In the list on the left hand side, select Advanced Backup Options
    5. On the right hand pane you will see an option "Enable Write File Caching".
    6. Please ensure this is ticked. Press OK to change the setting and close the dialog

I have the boot option, a USB, and yes like you a DVD too*Smile The good thing with the DVD is you can use it on older laptops(a friends or family member) to create offline images before working on their PC's. It might be a bit slower, but then one only needs to plan a bit more time(and go drink a coffee).

I do run the Preview Eval in a virtual machine but don't use any imaging program to back that up. I just make a copy of the VM on another HDD as a backup.

And you are right it is not your place. Just because I currently don't run Win 10 as my main operating system on any computer doesn't mean I don't have experience with it as the main OS on some computers I have used, owned/bought or returned to Windows 7.

Also as stated I have some experience with both Acronis True Image and Macrium Refect. I've used both to backup a new Lenovo notebook running Win 10 out of the box that I had for a week + then returned it because I didn't really care for Windows 10.

Well I was at the UEFI boot windows, which was showing me my choices. Didn't see any special choice for my DVD. never have.
I assume its a UEFI boot option for the dvd. What is strange is that Macrium never gave me any problems last week, last 3 days its been a real pain. If I run my Acronis boot disk, it runs with no problems, no errors, and boots faster from my dvd. I was test driving Macrium to see why so many folks like it.......not impressed right now. *Smile I will check out those settings that you told me about, and give it another shot, later. Thanks Cliff !!!!!

You're welcome Bud*Smile Being here and in Eight Forums has taught me one thing: Every PC and system setup is different. and what works well on one, does will not necessarily work well on another, that's just how it is, and why Windows users have such a wide choice of software(and that's good so).

Well I just made the change in Macrium that you asked me to make. "Enable Write File Caching " on my Macrium Refect which is on my hard drive. Funny after I made the change, I was thinking, why on this one? I don't use this method. I use Macrium boot disk only. That does not have any option like that, I looked. Anyhow, when I got to my boot screen choices, I did notice that right in front of my dvd/cd choice it says UEFI All my choices have that in front. Except legacy boot option. *Smile

So I booted back up into Macrium boot disk, this time no errors, still boots slow thou. and I made a backup image of my C-Drive without any problems THIS time. Still think its a small bug in Macrium, also trying to reboot from macrium, by clicking on the red box in lower left, macrium does not like my wireless mouse sometimes.....lol When the msg came up if I wanted to reboot now, had to use my keyboard make it work. Keyboard is wireless too, but macrium likes my keyboard better sometimes. lol

Anyhow it did work, no errors, took about 6 mins to make image, maybe 7. Thanks again for the help today Cliff Computers can drive ya a tad crazy sometimes....think we ALL know that. later.....*Confused

Glad you found a change that works to fix your problem.
I've been using Acronis (paid) for the last 10 years or so, and it's always worked reliably for me.

    It's the last 1-2 years i've been testing/using Macrium.
Macrium has worked reliably for me.

Unfortunately if you are using Macrium FREE there is no support.
You can't ask questions on the Macrium forum unless you have a Macrium paid key.

With the new Macrium free version 6 i prefer Macrium vs. Acronis.

I am now totally converted from Acronis to Macrium for all my systems.

My experience with Acronis is somewhat dated, but I found their interface to be non-intuitive - frankly a mess. The Macrium interface is very nice, and I have done probably hundreds of backups and maybe 100 restores without an issue, I think the performance of Acronis wasn't anything near Macrium when I switched over to Macrium a while back. With Macrium performance is great, I can backup 45GB of OS in about 2.5 minutes to internal raided disk (most of my restores are due to messed up windows updates, not trusting software uninstallers for applications, or experimental stuff including overclocking). To external USB single disk it is a bit slower but less than 5 minutes.
