Windows 10: Macrium Reflect and Compression

Did an interesting test on my OS drive which only contains OS and programs - no highly compressed data like videos.

My drive contains 37 GB, and I got the following backing up to an hdd

1) No Compression - 8 mins, file size 37 GB (75 MB/S)

2) Medium Compression - 10 mins, file size 22 GB (35 MB/s)

3) High Compression - 16 mins, file size 21 GB

These results show, the backup is clearly CPU limited (as seen in Task Manager).

The actual write speeds are well inside a standard HDD capability with compression.

Medium compression is 25% slower, but saves 40% of space.

What surprised me was High compression took 100% longer and barely made any difference in overall file size compared with medium compression.

Actually, I do not remember seeing a no compression option but maybe that was because I never looked.

I can see in theory it would be useful on a data drive with lots of videos which will not compress by much, but then one might as well use File Explorer.

My key conclusions is to use the default medium compression as recommended is fine.

Of course, this may vary for other users, but directionally I think this would be the norm for average users.

Restoring Windows 10 Image using Macrium Reflect


In addition to the above. Here's my suggestion in step by step.
I assume you have Macrium Installed in your current HD and already made a backup copy.

1. Connect your new HD via USB port and boot up.
2. Run Macrium, click on Restore tab then select the Backup Image that you made to restore
3. click on "select a different target disk" then select your new HD as destination
   
   
   
4. Proceed to restore then Shutdown and disconnect the old HD and replace with the new HD
5. Boot up with your new HD.

 

Macrium reflect compression


Hi,
1. There are two forms of image
a. Forensic (uncompressed, used + unused)
b. Normal (can set degree of compression).

2. Some file types are already compressed- e.g. some video, audio, photos. If these comprise a significant %ge of the used part of the partition or disk being imaged, image compression will be much reduced.

Therefore the answer is 'it depends'.

The base image (normal) will be relatively large, but smaller than the used part of what is being imaged.
A differential image will be smaller than that, perhaps very much smaller if little has changed since the base image was created.

3. As per you query, you say "scheduler not working for macrium reflect", are you referring to Task scheduler?

4. If it is Task scheduler, Is Task scheduler working on all programs, other than Macrium Reflect ?
