Windows 10: Macrium Reflect Disaster

W10 Pro, 16GB RAM, 480Gb SSD
Macrium Reflect Free v. 6.3.1835.0, attempting to image drive C:\. After several hours, image failed to complete.
System would not reboot in any way, not from CD/DVD drive, Flash drive etc., Ubuntu..
Data on C and other HD OK.
Attempt to repair MBR failed.
I finally took it to my PC technician of last resort and he could not fix the problem either. After two days of
trying, I ended up getting a new SSD and W10 Pro. Had to reinstall all my programs but did not loose any data.
He thinks, Macrium got confused by earlier version(s) of OS like W7 left on the C drive.
Any comments?

I suggest you get a good 3rd party image program like Macrium Reflect. You will be fearless like me, knowing you can recover from all disasters in 20 minutes.

Sounds like the drive failed as Macrium was trying to read it , that's all.

 

Macrium Reflect did not cause the trouble, it brought the existing trouble to the forefront. Did you sense something was afoot hours or days before proceeding with the hard-drive backup? I'm asking because many will suddenly begin a backup process if they sense something is not quite right or that the computer is not acting as it normally does.

 

Most modern systems don't use MBR as there uefi gpt disk so doing a MBR fix was never going to work anyway

 

You can run a check on your failed (presumably) disk e.g. Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) - do a 'surface scan' (ok, it's not a surface if it's a SSD, but a read/write test) if you want to convince yourself - such a check early on could have save you a lot of time.

Normally Macrium reports a CRC error if the drive is failing, but I guess there could be other outcomes.

 

Did you unplug the old drive with the old hdd

 

Yeah but could have been a corrupted BCD to me which is used by UEFI. Ironically, one of best tools to repair BCD is Macrium Reflect Free!
