Is it just not easier to not update macrium and use the current version a user has installed (whatever that maybe) to keep taking images especially if it's been used and images have successfully been restored from in the past? Then the user knows it works and really there is no reason to update Macrium and no need to keep burning rescue disks. Admittedly there is probably a flaw in my logic but I cannot see a reason to update it if it can be trusted to work.

Quite often, the WinPE is updated also. The rescue media contains the drivers necessary to work with the OS/Hdwe involved. A thumb is easier to create as a rescue media than a DVD, is reusable, and quicker. Macrium does a good job of keeping up with MS changes to 10. Although using a media from 2-3 versions ago will most likely work, it is a straightforward media creation. If thumbs aren't suitable, re-writable DVDs are a choice. Waiting too long between versions does run the risk of incompatibility. A possible risk, not probable. It's too easy to create the media to not do it.

Maybe @MoxieMomma could word this better.....

As I reported in post #13 WinPe currently has a bug ( losses keyboard and mice) so it is worth updating if your systems are effected , but like you say if it works good for you then it is fine , but if you do update the Program you must update the Rescue disk too as Older Rescue disks can not restore the images made by the newer versions , at least that was my experience. I use a CDRW for mine , but also make the ISO and then mount and copy it to a Fat32 USB Key as well.

side note: if you Right Click (RC) an .iso in Windows 10 and then Open with>File Explorer it will mount the iso as a Drive letter ( just like your harddrive) ,then you just copy the files over to the USB Drive which you already have Formatted Fat32. When done RC on the Mounted Drive and Eject it just like a DVD or USB KEY and File Explorer will UnMount the .iso again.

You have to make one in order to boot from it. You can do that on any computer that has MR installed. When you boot from it, you can choose you .mrimg file and where to restore it to.

@cutter What OS is on the new device? You backed up an 8.1 OS which had a license tied to the old machine. If the new machine came with Windows 10 installed, you may have a problem. You can install Macrium on the new machine and restore the 8.1 image, but if the hardware is radically different, you may need to find new drivers, and it probably will not activate. And you may have to contact Microsoft explaining that you replaced broken hardware and need your license re-activated.

It's physically possible to do, but you will have some license issues.

Tell us, in as much detail as possible, what the old and new machines are. Make, model, configuration....your system specs.

Even if you stay with a pre-installed Windows 10 (recommended), the .mrimg can be mounted and opened up in Explorer so you can copy your files, pics, installer programs, etc. NOT any installed apps or programs - they will need to be reinstalled.

You have some options, but please tell us more about the 2 systems, as detailed as possible.

    Thanks, TC
