Windows 10: Mark PDFs, images, and Office files as offline in Google Drive Beta

What’s changing

You can already make Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides files available offline. Now, as part of a new beta, you can mark also PDF, image, Microsoft Office, and other non-Google files for offline access using Google Drive on Chrome.

Why you’d use it

This feature helps complete the offline experience for Google Drive. Now, users can access their important non-Google files in an offline setting, like when they’re traveling or when there’s poor internet connectivity.

How to get started

Admins:

To apply to this beta, you must enable Drive File Stream use and installation for your domain, and enable offline for the domain and devices.

Apply to join the beta here.

Note: Admins who opted into the Alpha for offline for Docs, Sheets, and Slides will automatically be whitelisted for this beta.

End users:

First, enable offline from within the Drive or Docs settings.

Next, sign into Chrome with the account associated with the whitelisted Google Group and access Drive File Stream.

To mark the non-Google files as available offline, right click on a file and select “Make available offline.” You can use the offline preview feature as well.

Additional details

Note that while this feature is not currently supported in ChromeOS, we’re working on bringing these offline capabilities to ChromeOS in the future.

Additionally, users can also right click and open any non-Google files using native applications. By doing so, you can make an Office file available offline and—while offline—open that file using the native Microsoft Office application.

Once accepted into the beta, this feature is ON by default when:

Offline is enabled for the domain.

Users have Drive File Stream installed and offline is enabled in Google Drive or Google Docs settings.

PDF

Hello,

Regarding your PDF documents, the location will be based on where you saved the files. For your second inquiry, your documents can be converted to a PDF. If the original file is from Office Word, we suggest that you follow the steps below:

In Word, select File > Save As.

Select where you want to save the file.

Type a new File name if you want.

For Save as type, select PDF.

For Optimize for, select an option: Standard or
Minimum Size.

Select Open File After Publishing, if you want to open the file after you save it as a PDF. This is selected by default.

Select Save.

If the steps provided is not working, please get back to us with the exact version of your Office Word.

[HELP]Image recovery issues

Guys i am trying to fix my cousins Asus Eee netbook. It has a backup image file that is partitioned on the hard drive but when I go to use it the app will run through a few steps and stop. It is running Vista . Any suggestions?

Drive File Stream to replace Google Drive plug-in for Microsoft Office

What’s changing

We’re updating Drive File Stream to replace the functionality of the “Google Drive plug-in for Microsoft Office.” As a result, the outdated plugin will be shut down on June 26, 2019. This only impacts users of the Google Drive plug-in for Microsoft Office. Those users will notice two key changes:

New Drive / Outlook integration: The update to Drive File Stream will include a plugin to manage Google Drive files from Microsoft Outlook. This will make it easier for users to use Google Drive without leaving the Outlook interface.

New process to save to, or open from Drive: Drive File Stream users can save and open Drive files through the regular menu, rather than using the Google Drive plug-in for Microsoft Office interface.

To save to Drive, use File > Save, then choose a destination in Drive File Stream.

To open from Drive, Open through the File > Open menu and find the file you want.

If your organization uses the Google Drive plug-in for Microsoft Office, you should make sure your users are using the latest version of Drive File Stream before June 26, 2019 to ensure continued access to this functionality.

The new plugin will bring Drive to the Outlook interface

Drive File Stream offers an easy way to integrate Microsoft Office and Google Drive. The latest versions (30.1 and up) will include the new Outlook plugin that will make it easier for users to:

Save attachments from Outlook to Drive

Attach Drive files to Outlook messages

Ensure recipients always have access to Drive links sent in Outlook emails

Drive File Stream already makes it easy to save to the local Drive File Stream folder through the regular “Save” menu.

By ensuring your users are using the new plugin before June 26, 2019, there will be little to no disruption to their workflows.

How to get started

Admins: Make sure your users are using an up to date version of Drive File Stream. Use our Help Center to learn how to deploy Drive File Stream for your organization.

End users: Ensure you’re using an up to date version of Drive File Stream. Use our Help Center to download and install Drive File Stream on your computer.

Additional details

Users of the Drive for Office plugin will see an in-product notification, pictured below, starting on March 27, 2019. This will encourage them to update to the new plugin to continue using Drive from Outlook.
