Windows 10: McAfee security

More like scam than anything else.
Never accept any so-called "help" unless you initiate the request.
Any never, never, allow anyone to remotely access your computer.

 

That is excellent advice. I once called such a scam line and let them work on my Linux system. They never bothered me again.

 

Security Essential is not a bad software, but I daresay it is often the first to be targeted by malware developers for obvious reasons. I found McAfee to be too heavy for my liking. I have been partial to Kaspersky but even their 2016 version (supposedly Win10 compatible) has issues. I installed it earlier and ultimately ended up reformatting my Flex 14 twice. Once I had to get a factory technician to reload Win8.0 and proceed from there. Why, OneKey from Lenovo will not work, was Ok from 8.0 to 8.1.

The next time I installed AOMEI OneKey and that was safe in Win10. Again Kaspersky created problems, with too many hangs. My standard mail program is Thunderbird, and browser Chrome.

So I went saved all my data, redid the partitioning, removing all of Lenovo crap along the way, and then reloaded Win10. Very nice. A week later I again loaded Kaspersky and all hell broke loose. Chrome was hanging, and every-time the OneDrive wanted to be relinked. Finally, removed Kaspersky. Found that the Start key will not work. I went back to an AOMEI (previous day) recovery and thought I was done. Not quite since the Firefox profile (saved on another partition) had been messed up. Reloaded Firefox and am Ok now.

The system is not installing the latest upgrade to the 1511 build (KB3124200), so still I do not know. Did the stand alone download 300MB, and that too is bombing.

I am now down to MSE and thinking about going for AVG free or something like that.

 

McAfee as you say may be a bit heavy.
On all my systems it works lets all the upgrades and updates through and have had no problems at all.
Have not even had to remove or reinstall on upgrade like I believe some members have had to do with other Anti-Viruses

 

What work for others does not necessarily work for you.
You have to try out other programs until you find one that fits your needs.

For 2 years now, I have been using Windows Defender as my Real Time Protection, and a free edition of Malwarebytes as my On-demand protection. I never have security issue since.
But that's just me. It might not work for you.

 

It is now an Intel Product. That says it all. Microsoft and Intel are in cahoots.

 

Well, I finally got around to uninstalling McAfee and running MCPR.exe. I thought McAfee was blocking Skype but it turned out I was calling a duff account. *Rolleyes

I expected CPU usage and disk usage to be much less on startup but when I opened Task Manager disk usage was still hitting 100%.





So ... perhaps McAfee isn't as bad as all that afterall.
