  1. Meeting the Free Upgrade Deadline

Thanks. I should have researched it before.
I'm still going to ask Microsoft Support to clarify why I am getting the error messages when they clearly do not apply.
I HAVE to know the answer.

  2. I just got finished with Microsoft Support and they said this was a "first". They will research it and e-mail me back within 24-48 hours.

In the meantime, did you get 32-bit Windows 10 to install?

No, it wouldn't let me go any further than the initial compatibility check.

Did you give them the details about your motherboard's SiS chipset?

I don't know whether support for that is on par with the major manufacturers (Intel and AMD).

I hope that they're willing to expend some effort researching the issue.

I got a message back from Microsoft Support that they "tested" the CPU and it did not support Windows 10 and gave me a link to an Intel site.
I wrote back saying that I wanted to know specifically the reason it failed. I told them that cpu-world says it supports LAHF/SAHF.
Haven't heard back in 2 days.
It's not super important that I run W10 on that PC, after all it's just a refugee from a garage sale but I am curious.

  9. Wow! Microsoft Help Desk is frustrating.
I contacted them to get some detail on why my CPU "failed" and she went around in circles asking me for details which I had already given them 3 days ago.
Then she tells me I have to disable NX to upgrade. I told her I tried with it on and off. she said "it a problem with BIOS".
I asked her specifically what and she couldn't tell me.
    Then the big question.
Is this part of a plan to force people to buy new hardware.
    And the answer was "probably"!
I then asked her if she could e-mail me a transcript of the Support Chat and she said "I can't do that from my end".
    How convenient.
Every support chat I've had with other companies have the option to e-mail me the transcript.
It just left me with a bitter taste in my mouth.
Anyway, I consider this case closed because I can't get an "official" straight answer from MS.
    It was an interesting exercise.

Have you considered the possibility that it isn't Microsoft's problem? There are two parties involved here. Microsoft and the manufacturer of the hardware - especially the motherboard and the BIOS/UEFI on it.

  11. I did consider it. And it could very well be the case. It was the runaround on Microsoft's part that annoyed me and the apparent "brush-off" I got in the e-mail after first contacting them, saying that my model of CPU failed their test. Murky to say the least.
Not surprised based on past experiences with them.
