    Memory How Much?

What is the common amount needed with today's systems? What is the point where your wasting money? I'm talking about Windows10 64 bit. See a lot of systems here are 16 Gig, but a few are 32 Gig.

    :)

My laptop did an automatic update today and now I can't connect to my wifi. I just got this laptop a few days ago, and am still learning it, so I have no idea where to look or how to fix it.

    Memory How Much?

    Hello zplugger, *Smile

I'd say it would really depend on what you do on your PC for how much RAM you may need.

The more you run at the same time, the more RAM you will need. Some apps or games will also require a certain amount of RAM to be able to run.

If you only surf the net and use email, then 4GB will most likely be the minimum, but 8GB will be better for performance.

I have 32GB since I'm usually running at least one virtual machine, Outlook, and several tabs of IE11 open at the same time.

    Hope this helps some.

    Thanks
So more ram on a SSD drive would be a plus?

There is no such thing as RAM on an SSD.

An SSD is a disk drive. There is no substitute for RAM. While RAM and an SSD are both storage media their performance and operational characteristics are VERY different.

What I mean is will more ram help SSD last longer?

No. It will have no effect on the SSD other than not needing as large of a page file (virtual memory).

For normal use I would recommend 8GB of RAM. If you run a few virtual machines in parallel, you will need more.

Within reasonable limits adding more RAM will always improve performance. But there will always be a point of diminishing returns beyond which there will be little gain. That point is heavily dependent on your workload. For typical workloads 8 GB is about right, 16 GB usually being beyond that point. But if you are running multiple virtual machines or have a sufficiently heavy workload 16 or even 32 GB RAM can be justified.

A configuration with 8GB of RAM and an SSD (minimum 128GB) for the OS are optimal in my book. I have setup all my systems with this principle in mind and have no problems at all. They are all fast. The CPUs really only play a role once you have CPU intensive workload - which is very rarely the case for what we usually do.
