Windows 10: memory management bsod, windows 10 fall creators update 1709

I have many of the same events show up in my event viewer too. In my case I can trace them back to when the computer was previously shut down with fast start-up turned on. The use of fast start-up seems to create a higher proportion of these critical errors and can be traced to the use of hyberfile.sys which stores the windows kernel and all loaded drivers during the shutdown and then uses this hyberfile.sys file for a faster start-up time by loading them directly from the hyberfile when your system turns back on.

If you have not turned off Fast Startup I would do so and see if it makes a difference.

 

I'll disable fast startup at the next occurrance of the problem. log collection will likewise be done at the same time that way hopefully, whatever is doing it..is logged then.

 

ok..it just happened again..it seems to be happening every 4 days now, regular as clockwork.
I've sent another email to hp support, ran the log collector tool, AND turned off fast startup.
lets see if the latter move makes any difference...

Uninstall Cyberlink during the troubleshooting process.

The RAM is mismatched.
What options are there to remove 1 RAM module?
What options are there to test RAM ?

removing the ram modules...not possible, my hands are too big and I asked about tools with which to do so at bestbuy...the geeksquad guy remarked 'you wouldnt, we would or your oem would' and walked away like I was an idiot.

as to cyberlink..I kind of need that for dvd watching...

as versatile as vlc media player can be..it doesnt do dvd playback smoothly.

why do you recommend I uninstall it? is it flagging in the diagnostic log as responsible?

 

See if you can get a hemostat or needle nose pliers that have rubber on them.
Then review the owners manual to see the technique in removing and inserting the RAM modules.
Then very gently remove one of the RAM modules.

Please test each RAM with memtest86+ version 5.01 for 8 or more passes.
When the testing has completed 8 or more passes use a camera or a smart phone camera to take a picture and post an image into the thread.
The testing must be continuous and a significant portion of the testing can be run overnight.

how would that cause a complete black screen and acting like its just been booted for the day?

...owners manual? what owner's manual? and thats a big negative on the recommended tools...

and this all started with 1709.....good god if I could roll it back I would. nothing but headaches from that update....

 

1) Were you able to run the HP BIOS UEFI diagnostics in post #2?
If so what were the results?

2) Uninstall Avast:

3) Turn on Windows defender

4) Can you use safe mode, safe mode with command prompt, or safe mode with networking for 1 - 2 days to see if there are any black screens?

 

I turned off fast startup..we'll see if that isnt the cause...then I'll perform some invasive software surgery, starting with that uefi tool.

...one question..why the bloody blue hell would I want to remove my antivirus? I've never heard of any antivirus..except for norton *Spits on the ashes* taking its host pc's os with it.

Some third-party antivirus software have been known to cause black screens. Removing the software won’t leave your PC unprotected, because Windows Defender Antivirus will kick in if no other antivirus software is running.

 

Sorry if it seems like I'm being difficult it's not my intention I'm just really irritated with this and well some of the suggestions go counter to what I have been trained over the course of my lifetime in regards to computer experience..

Also sending this reply on my tablet so apologies for the horrible spelling grammar punctuation what not... I just got done updating my antivirus so... Also I can verify fast startup is indeed deactivated so we're going to see how that treats me and well if it ends up being what fixes this then I suppose I'll just live with the damn thing taking forever to turn on in the future.. everything has a trade-off..

 

The newest edition of the HP BIOS UEFI diagnostics is version 6.6.2.0.
1) Download and install:
HP PC Hardware Diagnostics | HP® Official Site

2) Run the test in the evening in loop until failure mode.
The next day if it has made 2 loops press the keyboard escape key to abort the testing.
Confirm the pass in the BIOS UEFI diagnostic logs.
The test is designed to abort if there is a failure of any of the tested components.
If there is a fail it will display a code that only HP can decode.
Report into the thread the results of the HP BIOS UEFI diagnostics.

3) In the BIOS see if you can find 3.3, 5 and 12 voltage values.
And the CPU voltage and frequency.
Please use a camera or smart phone camera to take pictures and post images into the thread.

4) When available post an image into the thread for the Memtest86+ version 5.01 RAM / DIMM / Motherboard testing (8 or more passes).

5) Open the HP website > enter the computer's product or serial number > select the operating system > view drivers and BIOS > post a URL or hyperlink into the thread

6) Upgrade the BIOS: Version/Date AMI A0.14, 2/22/2017 SMBIOS Version 2.8to: A0.16 Rev.A

7) Run the HP support assistant to see if there are any driver updates and report the results into the thread.

8) Once all of the above steps have been completed the results can be evaluated. If necessary there are options for hardware stress testing.

9) What is the status of the files on the computer?
a) Are all of the files backed up?
b) Have you made a backup image with Macrium or similar software?
c) Has a fresh restore point been made?

 

ok, my plan is simple, I've turned off fast startup, and am running windows with everything loaded fresh from the hard drive.

I've gone 3 days problem free, if I go a fourth day problem free, then I'm thinking maybe its something to do with fast startup gimping up.

if I go 8 days problem free, then I know for a fact it has to do with fast startup, or is at the very least tangentially related.

I do plan, when I have a little more free time, to run the uefi test, I'll need help getting that to run on boot, and I'd need help getting into the bios.

one thing I can state for the record, anything to do with updating the bios will NOT be done, the last 7 times I've updated a machine's bios(at manufacturer support's request and with their instructions) I've had nothing but grief of the level that I've ended up sending the machine in to have the bios issue fixed, and in all but two cases, ended up with the machine being wiped to factory standards.

In short, I've been burned by updating the bios, badly.

while I have backups of all my important stuff, spending three days reinstalling and reconfiguring things is NOT something I'm prepared to do without more than reasonable, just cause.
