    MemTest86+ version 5.01 Booting Failures/"Use of" Questions

TenForums is the best source I've seen for MemTest86+ guidance, so here are two questions regarding MemTest86+ version 5.01.

    1. I downloaded a Memtest86+ V5.01 "Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)" and extracted and burned the small ISO file to a DVD-RW. At the time my PC would only boot from a Windows Recovery CD or USB device. When I replaced a Windows Recovery DVD with the Memtest86+ ISO DVD, the PC continuously failed to boot. Finally came this explanation:

ERROR: No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed.

Should I have downloaded instead the "Pre-Compiled Bootable Binary (.zip)?" I should mention that during disk creation I forgot to check off the "burn" confirmation box. But I find it doubtful disk creation failed.

    2. Before running MemTest86+ is it absolutely necessary to reset BIOS first boot order to CD or USB? Can't I simply use (in my case) F12 for "Setup" to initiate MemTest86+ from the CD or USB? I ask this because a) I see nothing in the MemTest86+ instructions suggesting it needs a reboot to finalize testing, and b) My recent highly troubled upgrade to Windows 10 Creators Update brought the above mentioned booting failure ordeal for which cause and correction remain undetermined[/URL]. By "correction" here, I mean a correction did in fact occur -- unexpectedly and unexplainedly. So although my PC now functions flawlessly under "Creators," I am leery about changing boot order at this time. Under the previous Windows 10 Version 1607 Anniversary Update the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool consistently reported a hardware problem. But under "Creators" the tool consistently shows no memory problems.

    :)

  2. BSOD error codes: 0x0000007e, 0x0000003b on Windows 10 operating system

I ran Memtest86+ 5.01 several times with no errors!

  3. Many "Blue Screen of Death" Errors (Windows 10 64bit)

    1) Update the BIOS 2.8 > 2.9 Release Date 2016-02-19

    2) Open file explorer > this pc > c: > search for C:\widows\memory.dmp > post into the thread a one drive or drop box share link

    3) Run Memtest86+ version 5.01 for 8 or more passes.

Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

Memtest86+ version 5.01 is not run by time but by passes.

The more passes the better the test.

It sometimes takes passes into the 20s to find malfunctioning RAM.

There is 16 GB RAM on the computer.

    Memtest 86+ version 5.01 takes approximately 1 - 2 hours /GB RAM

Just 1 error is a fail and you can abort testing.

Then test 1 RAM module at a time in the same DIMM for 8 or more passes.

The RAM is not identical on all DIMMs but is in pairs.

When was the 2nd pair of RAM added?

How old is the 1st pair of RAM?

    4) When memtest86+ version 5.01 has completed 8 or more passes use a camera or smart phone camera to take a picture and post an image into the thread. If you have any problems posting an image please use a one drive or drop box share link.

There were 3 MSI drivers released in 2017: Audio, Chipset, LAN

Had you already updated these drivers or do they need updating?

    MemTest86+ version 5.01 Booting Failures/"Use of" Questions

    Hi WJB2,

    Welcome to the 10forums *Smile

I'll have a look at some things for you, with a little luck there are only a few things you need to do.

You shouldn't have to reset the boot order.
When booting, before Windows loads, you should see 2 options at POST. 1 is to go to the BIOS and the other is to get a list of bootable devices. Choose the one with the list of bootable devices.

I can't find what I'm looking for, does your BIOS have an option for legacy boot or similar options?

First bootable device is the EFI; no Legacy option when viewed from BIOS (see here) .
    Attachment 151594
Prior to this photo I had to remove the DVD with the Memtest86+ ISO because it endlessly spun, stopped, then spun again, keeping the HDD indicator solidly lit. To confirm the problem was the disc, not the internal "DVD Super Multi Drive," I inserted a Windows 10 64-bit Repair Disc. It worked fine, spinning into ready service and going quiet, with the HDD barely "winking" throughout. Prior to burning the Memtest86+ ISO the problem disc worked perfectly.
So please at your convenience continue with your much appreciated guidance. In the meantime I will decide between eventually retrying a "Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)" or placing a "Pre-Compiled Bootable Binary (.zip)" onto a USB drive.
Finally ... not sure what you were looking for; online technical manual here.

I'm looking for an option that enables legacy mode, I don't see an option to do this or it is not described.

Enabling legacy mode (and disabling fast startup) make it possible to boot from a USB with memtest86+ for a long time if there were issues booting memtest86+.

Didn't see it mentioned but I've never had luck with RW discs even if closed/finalized, only the R when wanting to boot to them.

Well, Axe0's and Berton's comments provide potential options. Such as burning the MemTest86+ ISO to an R disk, which I have several of. Though during my recent, prolonged rescue efforts I had not one problem booting from a Windows 10 Creators Update ISO on disc. I'll also look for a way to disable fast start-up, which I'm sure there must be and will seek help if necessary from ACER Community forums.

Will update as appropriate if/when successful. Thanks all!
