Windows 10: Microphone Connection Issues

I've been having a problem the last few days with my PC and I'm at my wits end. Since the previous Windows update 3/13/21 my output audio is playing through my input--for example, if I have sounds playing on my desktop, and I go record audio in voice recorder and play it back, you can hear my desktop audio, slightly quieter and with static at some points. It is NOT audio bleeding from my headphones to my microphone, because my voice is not being picked up in these recordings at all. I cannot speak through my microphone.​

I have tried all of the usual troubleshooting-- checking the default microphone settings in the sound/sound settings menu, made sure my microphone privacy settings were in order, updated/reinstalled drivers, tried different microphones, tried using both front and back sound input jacks, reinstalled windows 10, bought a in/out to usb converter--and nothing. I'm not sure if this is a software or hardware issue, but I would like to know which direction I should go from here to get this resolved. Only thing I can imagine it being at this point is my on-board soundcard malfunctioning.​

Microphone issues

Here are the possible reasons why you're getting an error "The microphone did not pick anything up" when using it:

• Incorrect settings (microphone is not set as default device)
  
• Corrupted or outdated driver
  
• Faulty device
  

For us to isolate the issue, we'd like to know the following:

• Were there any changes made to your computer prior to this issue(e.g. Windows updates)?
  
• Have you tried connecting other microphone to your computer?
  
• Have you tried connecting the microphone to the other computer?
  

In the meantime, we suggest running the Recording Audio Troubleshooter to find and repair problems with recording sound. We also suggest checking if your microphone is set as your default recording device. For troubleshooting steps, please see
