Microsoft adding a new privacy API to Chromium (Chrome and Edge)

On the privacy front, Microsoft is working on another new feature so users don’t have to compromise between privacy projects and embedded content will continue to function correctly.

Last year Apple added a new privacy API called ‘Storage Access’ to its Safari browser that influences how third-party embedded content request access to first-party cookies.

It looks like Microsoft is also bringing Storage Access API to the Chromium browser. On July 27, Microsoft proposed implementation of Storage Access API and feature will be enabled via flag initially.

This API will allow third-party embedded content to request access/control of storage access permissions only when the user interacts with the embedded content. The access would otherwise be denied by the browser’s settings.

The current status of Storage Access API in other browsers:

    • Microsoft Edge: Intent to implement.
    • Mozilla Firefox: Shipped in 65.
    • Apple Safari: Shipped in 11.1.

“This is a standalone API addition. There are scenarios where storage access is restricted, e.g. when third-party cookies are disabled, and in those cases the access result is currently static. In scenarios where the Storage Access API is used to grant access these APIs will now have dynamic behavior regarding permission,” wrote Brandon Maslen, a senior software engineer at Microsoft.

In a post on Github, Microsoft is suggesting the Chrome team to add permission prompt for users who have disabled third-party cookies and provide implementation if a user is interested.

Microsoft wants to offer a standard mechanism for webpages to request access to storage resources that would otherwise be blocked by the browser. The Redmond firm also noted that this will enable a “greater level of control over storage access permissions allows for existing Chromium privacy controls”.

The Chrome status page says the Storage Access API is in development. There is also a commit on Chromium Gerrit to add ‘Storage Access API’ feature flag and anyone should be able to test the feature by enabling flag in Chrome Canary.

A first look at Microsoft’s new Chromium-powered Edge browser

Microsoft is rebuilding its Edge browser on Chromium. The software maker has been testing versions of this browser internally at Microsoft, and now The Verge has secured an exclusive first look at the early work thanks to a source who wishes to remain anonymous. While the previously leaked screenshots made Edge look very similar to Chrome, Microsoft is adding its own touches and animations to make it look and feel like a Windows browser.

When you first install the Chromium version of Edge, Microsoft will prompt you to import favorites, passwords, and browsing history from Chrome or Edge (depending on your default). The setup screen also prompts you to pick a style for the default tab page before you start browsing.

Microsoft is developing a built-in ad blocker for its Edge browser

"One of the first browser add-ons many people install to improve their online experience is Adblock Plus or something similar. Until recently, Microsoft Edge's lack of support for add-ons put off a lot of would-be users, but reports from Build 2016 suggest that native ad blocking is on its way to the Internet Explorer successor.

Adblock Plus is coming to Edge, but built-in ad blocking would negate the need for such an add-on. A slide shown off and snapped at a Build presentation shows that the next version of Edge, in response to user feedback, will feature ad blocking capabilities. There's no word on delivery timescale, but the upcoming Windows 10 Anniversary Update would seem a likely candidate.

ZDNet's Ed Bott photographed the slide which shows Microsoft's development roadmap built around feedback from testers. Right at the top of the list is reference to plans to create a plugin and extension store for Edge, but it's entry number four that's more intriguing.

"Build ad blocking features into the browser" is listed as a Feature Request from users. But the good news is that it is not only listed as being "Deliverable 4682811", but as "Targeted for the next version".

This will no doubt come as good news for those who have fallen in love with Edge, but it's not something that will be welcomed by the likes of Adblock Plus. It does seem that, particularly in the mobile arena, there is a move to baking ad blocking into the browser so it makes sense that Microsoft is following the trend. But it is the fact that Edge straddles Windows 10 on the desktop and Windows 10 Mobile that makes this a particularly interesting move.

Keep an eye out for Insider builds in the coming weeks as the feature may be just around the corner.
