Microsoft admits Windows 10 KB4517389 breaks Start menu

Windows 10 KB4517389, which was recently shipped to the general consumers with security fixes and printing improvements, also breaks down the Start menu with a critical error.

Relatively, the October 2019 update for Windows 10 version 1903 has fewer issues and provide flawless experience on the majority of devices, but the Start menu is still experiencing problems.

Start menu bug has been experienced for several cumulative updates and we have come across reports that users still experience such issues after applying the patch. Windows 10’s Start menu critical error message recommends users to sign out of Windows and sign in again, but signing back does not resolve the bug.

It’s worth noting that this issue is reminiscent of two September patches that also broke the Start menu on Windows 10 version 1903 (May 2019 Update) computers.

In an update to the community forum, a Microsoft employee has finally confirmed that the Redmond firm is aware of the issue and a fix will be rolled out by the end of October.

“We are aware of this issue and estimate a resolution to be released in late October,” a Microsoft engineer said.

Microsoft is yet to document this on its support pages.

According to Microsoft’s support dashboard, Start menu issue is not significantly impacting a large number of users and the company is monitoring the reports of the broken Start that originated with KB4515384.

A source, who wished to remain anonymous, also told us that Microsoft is actively investigating the broken Start menu issue reported by a small number of users.

On its support documents, Microsoft says it’s not aware of any other issues hitting Windows 10 KB4517389.

  2. Start Menu showing Critical Error after installing KB4517389 update

    Installed kb4517389.

I get critical error when using the start menu.

Uninstalling the update fixes the issue.

This is the third different update in a row that breaks the start menu with the same critical error.

    What is the issue Microsoft?

  3. Start Menu showing Critical Error after installing KB4517389 update

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, none of these suggestions fixed the problem.

Method 1 (PowerShell command): error persists

Method 2 (Safe Mode, Clean Mode): I did this before, but tried again. As before, in SafeMode, the Start Menu does not work at all, although it gives no error message. In Clean Mode, the error message appears when accessing the Start Menu.

Method 3 (create new account): error persists

I have uninstalled KB4517389 yet again. Everything works as it should.

I don't know if this is relevant, but the previous update, KB4524147, started this problem.
KB4524147 affected BOTH my print spooler and my Start Menu. I uninstalled it and I noticed that
KB4524147 disappeared from the update list when I next checked for updates.

KB4517389 does not affect my printer, but it does generate that Critical Error when accessing the Start Menu. I hope that there's a fix soon.
