Microsoft confirms Windows 10 21H1 update, reveals one new feature

Microsoft has quietly confirmed that Windows 10 21H1 would be the next feature update and it will arrive in early 2021, as previously rumoured.

There have been clues over the past few months that Microsoft is shifting to a new ‘minor-major’ update cadence in 2021 to focus on the development on Windows 10X, which was originally supposed to launch in December 2020.

Microsoft had hinted that it would still look to release Windows 10 feature updates twice a year, but this is the first time Microsoft has given any sort of confirmation.

In a new support document, Microsoft has confirmed that the next update after version 20H2 would be ‘Windows 10 21H1’. Microsoft has also updated older support documents to highlight support for Transportation Layer Security (TLS) 1.3 in version 21H1.

This new security layer will reduce the latency, improve performance and security of the web connections made to Windows 10.

As you may be aware, Windows 10 test builds are no longer tied to specific feature updates. As a result, we don’t know when and what features are definitely coming to Windows 10 in the next twelve months.

In version 21H1, you can expect minor improvements and features. For example, it will add dark more to the result pages in Windows Search. Likewise, Microsoft is bringing DNS over HTTPS (DoH) to Windows 10 for increased privacy and security.

DoH would be disabled by default in Windows 10, but you’ll be able to configure it via the Networks tab in the Settings. Or you can also directly enable this feature in your favourite web browsers, such as Chrome, Edge or Firefox.

According to sources, Microsoft would begin testing Windows 10 21H1 (Build 19043) with testers in the Release Preview Channel in January or February 2021. While the plans are always subject to change, version 21H1 is currently expected to begin rolling out as an enablement package by May 2021.

  2. Microsoft Confirms Windows, Office 6-Month Update Cycle

Microsoft has been steadily increasing stability, features and, the company hopes, attractiveness of its latest Windows 10 operating system. Recently, its Creator's Update has brought, among other features, a performance-boosting Game Mode, a 3D version of the popular and (respectably ancient) Paint app, as well as increased privacy control, something users clamored for. Now, the Redmond company has confirmed that it's looking towards a six month update cycle for Windows 10 (thus aligning it with Office 365 ProPlus), looking to streamline and increase predictability of its support.

Microsoft released the Windows 10 Anniversary Update in August 2016, and the Creators Update made its public debut on April 11 2017, which is already close to the six-month update cycle the company is now confirming (seven months, in this case.) Now the company has confirmed that it plans to release its next step on the Windows 10 operating system on September 2017. From then on, updates should arrive in a steady cadence, on every subsequent March and September. Each Windows 10 feature release will be serviced and supported for 18 months, as is currently the case, and the company has also added that its System Center Configuration Manager will support this new aligned update model for Office 365 ProPlus and Windows 10, "making both easier to deploy and keep up to date."

  3. Microsoft signals end of Paint program

Microsoft has confirmed that it will continue to offer its graphics program Paint.

In a recent update, it had listed Paint as a feature that would be either removed or no longer developed.

Paint, renowned for its simplicity, has been part of the Windows operating system since its launch in 1985.

Microsoft suggested it would not remain on Windows 10 by default but did say it would be available for free on the Windows Store.

Microsoft testing blue light reduction feature for Windows 10

"Microsoft is slowly revealing new features in its next major update to Windows 10, and it appears blue light reduction feature might be a future addition. The software giant released a new build of Windows 10 testers yesterday with very few visible additions, but Windows enthusiasts have already started picking it apart for clues on new features. Twitter user "Core"has discovered references to a "BlueLightReduction" setting deep within the next major update to Windows 10 (codenamed Redstone 2). It appears to be a setting that will be toggled from the Action Center (notification center) in the operating system.

F.lux has been the most popular option for Windows users looking to reduce blue light in the evenings, but Microsoft's own native toggle will bring this feature to every Windows 10 user. Apple has also integrated a similar feature in iOS 9, but it hasn't announced any plans to bring blue light reduction to Mac OS yet. Microsoft only appears to be testing the feature right now, so there's no guarantee it will ship in the update due early next year. If Microsoft does implement it fully then it will presumably be available on the mobile version of Windows 10, too.
