Microsoft confirms Windows 10 March update is crashing some PCs

As we reported yesterday, Windows 10 KB5000802 update has been crashing PCs with multiple and endless BSOD. In a statement, Microsoft has now confirmed that the March 2021 cumulative update is causing serious issues for some devices connected to certain printers.

According to reports, nearly all supported versions of Windows 10 are affected, which includes version 20H2, version 2004, version 1909, and even version 1803/1809. In an update to its support document, Microsoft confirmed a number of Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) – or critical system crashes – are caused by March 2021 updates.

Here’s a complete list of affected Windows 10 versions and their update KB ID (build numbers):

    • Windows 10 version 1803 — KB5000809 (OS Build 17134.2087)
    • Windows 10 version 1809 — KB5000822 (OS Build 17763.1817)
    • Windows 10 version 1909 — KB5000808 (OS Build 18363.1440)
    • Windows 10 version 2004 and 20H2 — KB5000802 (OS Builds 19041.867 and 19042.867).

Microsoft noted that users might receive an “APC_INDEX_MISMATCH error” with a blue screen when attempting to print to certain printers in some apps. It’s unclear how many printers are affected, but several users told us that they’re seeing the issue on printers from Kyocera Ricoh, and others.

This suggests that the problem is not exclusive to a particular printer brand and it’s possible that the latest update has compatibility issues with certain printing drivers.

Microsoft is still investigating the problem and more details will be published soon.

How to fix the Blue Screen of Death error

The good news is that there’s a relatively simple fix for Blue Screen of Death crashes: uninstall the cumulative updates and pause the updates for at least 7 days or until the problem is fixed by Microsoft.

To do this, open Control Panel > Programs & Features > Viewed installed updates. Select the update and click on ‘Uninstall’.

If the process fails via Control Panel, you can also use Command Prompt.

For version 2004/20H2, use the following command:

    • wusa /uninstall /kb:5000802

For version 1903/1909, use the following command:

    • wusa /uninstall /kb:5000808

You can use the same command for any version of Windows 10, but make sure that you replace the update numbers after KB with the one that you wish to uninstall.

  2. Microsoft Confirms Windows, Office 6-Month Update Cycle

Microsoft has been steadily increasing stability, features and, the company hopes, attractiveness of its latest Windows 10 operating system. Recently, its Creator's Update has brought, among other features, a performance-boosting Game Mode, a 3D version of the popular and (respectably ancient) Paint app, as well as increased privacy control, something users clamored for. Now, the Redmond company has confirmed that it's looking towards a six month update cycle for Windows 10 (thus aligning it with Office 365 ProPlus), looking to streamline and increase predictability of its support.

Microsoft released the Windows 10 Anniversary Update in August 2016, and the Creators Update made its public debut on April 11 2017, which is already close to the six-month update cycle the company is now confirming (seven months, in this case.) Now the company has confirmed that it plans to release its next step on the Windows 10 operating system on September 2017. From then on, updates should arrive in a steady cadence, on every subsequent March and September. Each Windows 10 feature release will be serviced and supported for 18 months, as is currently the case, and the company has also added that its System Center Configuration Manager will support this new aligned update model for Office 365 ProPlus and Windows 10, "making both easier to deploy and keep up to date."

  3. Microsoft Botches Up UEFI Support for Windows 7 on ASUS Motherboards

Microsoft suggests updating to Windows 10 to patch Windows 7

MICROSOFT HAS confirmed a potentially lappy-borking problem that it won't be fixing, because Windows 7.

Woody Leonhard, the respected Windows columnist, points to a problem involving Asus motherboards, which also appear rebadged in a variety of other manufacturers' machines, and the activation of UEFI Secure Boot for Windows 7 in a patch KB3133977.

Short version: install update, welcome to Borksville, population you.

Both Asus and Microsoft acknowledged the problem. Microsoft entitled the article "BitLocker can't encrypt drives because of service crashes in svchost.exe process in Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2", but we prefer to just call it "Trevor for brevity."

The firm's advice was that it's an optional update, leave well alone, you'll be fine, or alternatively turn secure boot off.

Then Microsoft did a silly, silly thing.

It moved the update from 'optional' to 'recommended' and anyone who reads this site regularly will know what happens when Microsoft does this. That's right boys and girls - it makes it automatically install, unless you've specifically told your machine not to.

So now, if you have one of the affected motherboard and you keep your security updates automatic like wot Microsoft recommends, then your machine will stop working properly.

We should add it's not permanently bricked, but it will take some mucking about in the BIOS to fix and that's a pain even for an experienced computer user.

Microsoft has, by offering a workaround, suggested heavily that it won't be fixing the problem, though we have asked the question, so expect a response in about a fortnight.

But the real kicker is this piece of advice: "Note The Secure Boot feature is supported in Windows 10. To learn more about the security advantages of this feature and about the upgrade path from Windows 7 to Windows 10, go to the following Windows website"

Holy toledo, this company really knows how to rub people up the wrong way.

After all - if the advice is to manually avoid the update or move to a version of the operating system where there's virtually no control over updates, then Microsoft is dealing in massive contradictions.

A more cynical site would suggest that it's yet another example of Microsoft running Windows 7 into the ground and adding built in obsolescence to encourage quicker updates. But we're not that sort of site.

Its the patching to force secure boot that is the problem win 7 does not support secure boot
hence it borks systems and well microsofts answer is Cactus >your Asshole > insert

Microsoft signals end of Paint program

Microsoft has confirmed that it will continue to offer its graphics program Paint.

In a recent update, it had listed Paint as a feature that would be either removed or no longer developed.

Paint, renowned for its simplicity, has been part of the Windows operating system since its launch in 1985.

Microsoft suggested it would not remain on Windows 10 by default but did say it would be available for free on the Windows Store.
