Bah... speculation upon speculation, rumor upon rumor... one source says one thing, another says the exact opposite...

Fact is, Someone at Microsoft probably "investigates" all scenarios, and whether or not they go one way or another is ultimately up to the brass, and those decisions generally don't get made until just before it happens.

Microsoft, for it's part, tends to be willing to take long term losses on hardware, but not always.. (the Kin was a notable example, but it didn't have the kind of support that Surface has internally).

    :)

    Frequently Asked Questions: Windows 10

In a statement provided to The Verge, Microsoft confirms the Surface Pro 3 and "entire Surface Pro lineup" will get the update to Windows 10, but Windows RT won't get the full OS. "We are working on an update for Surface, which
will have some of the functionality of Windows 10. More information to come," says a Microsoft spokesperson.

Windows 10, touch keyboard covers full size app window.

I have the exact problem today, April of 2018, in my brand new Microsoft Surface Book 2. I am not using the tablet mode anymore. It is a pity; a bug is killing the user experience of the whole tablet mode feature.

    Please give us a fix.

    Yes, rumors.

The only reason the Surface hasn't done better is because people don't realize what an awesome device it really is.

I had a surface. After one day, I returned it back to the store. Then I got ASUS T100 10" windows tablet instead. It's a keeper.

I bought a Surface 3 and also returned it within 3 days, the fan came on and stayed on. I then bought a Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro - extremely happy with it.

Rumor that's been debunked by Microsoft.

I have an SP3 and it's been the most amazing device ever. It's so versatile. My favorite feature is the kickstand and it's great having it everywhere whether it's the kitchen, bed, bath or sofa.

  9. I have the Surface Pro first generation that I got for less than a 128Gb iPad would have cost and couldn't be more pleased.

As a tablet it is a bit on the heavy side, not really suitable for one-handed operation imo. But on the lap, with or without the type or any other cover, it is a joy to use. Screen big enough for those things you might want to do while sitting in the recliner.

As a desktop, just a quick connect to a bigger monitor and all things run just fine.

I would hate to see the line discontinued as I personally think that MS has a real winner with the Surface Pro line.

I'd like to see them offer a 16GB memory version. The wimpy memory is the only thing holding me back from buying one.

Of course that's the same reason holding me back from buying pretty much any Windows 8.x tablet/convertible/2-in-1/ultrabook these days.. none of them have more than 8GB of memory.

  11. Since the Surface Pros all have SSDs, I would think that 8Gb would be plenty. Even if it did some swapping it would be pretty fast.

Mine has 4Gb of RAM and I have about 1/2 dozen apps running at any given time and haven't noticed a slowdown. I will readily admit that all but one of them aren't real powerhouse programs though.

What does an SSD have to do with anything?

I need to run multiple virtual machines, that takes real physical memory.. not virtual memory. I also do development and tend to have 4-6 copies of Visual Studio open at any given time (each copy takes almost 1-1.5GB of memory on average, depending on project size).

I don't think you can suggest what is "plenty" for anyone. My desktop has 32GB (with SSD's) and it's not enough.

Given what you describe I doubt there will be any machines in the SP realm that will fit the bill. Wrong product for the tasks imo.

It's not the right machine for your purpose. It's not what surface was made for. You need a tank.

Not at all. I have a Gigabyte Brix that is far smaller than a surface that gives me 16GB of memory, both a 256GB SSD and 1TB hard disk, both Mini-displayport and HDMI outputs, 4 USB3 ports and an i7 4770. And it cost less than $1000 in total. If it had a built-in display, and a battery it would be perfect.. but it doesn't so it's not portable.

Regardless, I don't need all that in a portable device. I just need something that can be a tablet/laptop that allows me to do my work portably. I don't need an i7, and i3 would be fine... I just need everything the surface has, with double the memory. That's not a lot to ask for.
