Microsoft Could Kill the Entire Surface Tablet Lineup...

    Hi there

Any piece of Hardware *Might* have a flaw in it -- that's more likely due to the Logistics company shipping it rather than any defect in the manufacturing -- I mean even at airports you see "Hun=mans" luggage thrown about roughly and stored goodness knows where. With poorly paid truck drivers etc I doubt whether the transportation of the SP3 from Factory to end consumer isn't always done in the most ideal of conditions.

I'm totally AMAZED with my SP3 -- Would I buy another one -- absolutely (although it's not cheap) - Ms have this one 100% right apart from the price of course.

Anybody I've shown mine to would beg borrow or steal to get one.

Now the RT devices - well that's probably a dead end.
@Mystere -- your provisos make the SP3 what it is -- PORTABLE. That's what COSTS the money -- I can build a mega powerful MONSTER PC that you'd need a forklift truck to move and probably would withstand the blast of a small nuclear device for not too much money.

I think you should perhaps look at the physics and engineering required to get a full i7 processor, a fully 4K capable graphics processor (easily better than the current full 1920 X 1080 full HD) and an SSD into a smallish box no fatter than a typical mobile phone. By no means easy.

    Cheers

I almost bought a Surface, agonized weeks over it and then decided against it. IMO they are to clunky as a tablet, I will go the iPad route, or maybe even the new larger iPhone 6, that really suits me better over all.

Again, the Surface as a tablet just doesn't have the apps quality of an Apple or Android, so it is left to compete in the laptop arena, that is why sales are not strong for it. I absolutely, or my friends know, zero people who own a Surface.

  3. If you only look at the Surface Pro line as a tablet then you missed the point altogether.

The idea is to have a full fledged computer that can also be a laptop. In that, the Surface Pros are superb.

And yes, the 'modern apps' have some holes in their coverage, but then those holes can be filled with desktop apps that are at worst, as good as anything on the iPad or Android tablets, but most often are much better.

I have a first generation Surface Pro. I was going to get a new iPad, but for less money as a new iPad similarly configured, I got a full computer that just happens to function as a tablet quite well too.

    Hi there.

At work with TWO nice large monitors and a docking station the SP3 EASILY beats any corporate laptop OR desktop which are always several years old.

People just looking at these as Ipad competitors or large iphones or expensive tablets have missed the WHOLE point of this device -- in fact you could probably THROW AWAY your ipad -the SP3 covers both PC and Tablet stuff - and the fact that people are even mentioning "apps from the store " means they haven't understood what this device is FOR.

Although of course it can run apps and in any case you can load a VM up on it so you could even run an ANDROID VM on your Windows device too - and get anything you like from the google play store.

  5. I agree and that's even true for the 1st generation SP.

I have a power cover that I added, got on Ebay for under $100. That takes care of the battery time issue for the 1st gen quite nicely at the expense of a little weight.

And I have the Docking station that I got for $99 on a one-day sale at Best Buy. When I'm on the docking station I have it connected to my PS3 3D 24" display, a full sized USB keyboard and a Logitech T650 trackpad. Makes for an excellent desktop replacement.

For some the Surface Pros seem a bit pricey, and compared to the low end laptops you see for less than $500 they are. But they are much more portable and the screen is so much better.

I haven't yet sold my MacBook Pro w/Retina, but haven't actually used it for over a month so I guess I should.

You are absolutely incorrect. I own such a device. It fits in the palm of your hand, it can have 16GB, a big SSD *AND* a regular laptop hard drive. It can do everything I need, but it doesn't have a battery and display attached. This device is smaller the surface in total area.

As I said, all I need is everything the surface has but 16GB of memory. So please stop telling me that's impossible, since I already have it all in a non-portable device of a smaller size.

So you're okay with a 2" thick tablet, wouldn't that be a bit cumbersome.

I think he's comparing cherries with water melons. It's a bit like Aero, Microsoft can't cater to everyone.

No, i'm saying that if you took this thing apart and laid it out in the form factor of a Surface, it would take up less space than the current components do. The thickness is a function of the fact things are stacked vertically rather than laid out horizontally.

My point is, no. It does not take a "tank" or a large space to give me what I need. They're perfectly capable of making what I want, in the form factor I want. They just aren't doing it.

    Hi there

They won't make for "general purpose" a machine that possibly only 3 people would want - but I'm sure if you took your specs to someone with exactly what you wanted they could make a one-off for you --probably cost many thousands of dollars though !!!

Everybody wants different machines - what goes out into the market is usually if ENOUGH people want a typical type of machine.

I'm not having a go at you -- you obviously know what you want - but the Market doesn't perceive enough people want that sort of device to make volume production -- nothing to stop you commissioning a "one off" though. !!

    Cheers

I guarantee there are plenty of people that would like a surface pro with all the existing specs, except 16GB.

Target only one specific sector and how do you expect to make any money on an over priced device :/
Apple already owns that sector *Wink

  14. MS must not agree or there would be a model with that.

They've probably looked at making one with that much RAM and found a too small market to bother with in their research.

  15. I guess you'll have to wait and see if Dell picks it up and you can build your own Surface *Smile
Probably going to need a car battery though *Wink
